The Apple TV Experience

So yesterday I spent some time checking out Wyatt's Apple TV.  I really liked it.  I was able to bring up all my flickr photos, youtube videos, check out some movies, trailers, music videos, listen to some songs, all on a nice easy to use UI and little front row remote like experience.  It was pretty cool.  I think I'd actually purchase one.

Now I don't have a nice LCD like he had, but that's in the cue I guess.  I've been meaning to get an Basestation for awhile for good wifi experience, and that Apple TV looks like a perfect hookup especially if they are talking wireless n back and forth.

I'm going to do some digging on what kinds of hacks and plugins are out there for the Apple TV, then, I'll have to get one.

Hello Recession?

It amuses me every time I hear NPR talk about how the FED still doesn't believe we're in a recession yet.  In the past 3 weeks the stock market has tumbled some 600 points, to the lowest point since 2006.  Oil worries continue to surge and have begun to affect everyone from school bus drivers, truckers, soccer moms, poltical power plays, to airlines and average joes.  The housing market continues to dive as the credit crunch stays on the radar, jobless claims up and hello folks we be @#$@!

Yet, apparently we're not ready to think about the idea that a recession is here.  Well I'm a consumer and I'll tell ya its been here and the wallet is getting freeze dried and duck taped shut.  Consumer spending will fall to a slow crawl soon inbetween stories of record fires, floods and crushing stock market losses.

The only real good news is all those stocks I missed out on getting into are now cheap again and the options traders on the scene are bound to make a buck or two on the what ifs and eventual climbing the market will take.  Though some sources expect even more losses, who knows.

Energy is America's achilies heel and its putting in motion mass hysteria.  Everyone is gonna start pinching the bottom line and passing the expense buck to the consumer which is just gonna push your product or service from must have, to luxury to awww screw it go minimal- i don't need it.

For research, its probably a good time to be around because if there's one thing you gotta do on this scecne is reconnect with the consumer on getting in with what they can't live without.

In thinking about that, despite the flood, fires, and stock woes, what are some areas of products or services that people aren't gonna shut the door on?

People will continue to spend, though less and be far more choosey right?  So where are the golden tickets?

1. connectivity

Ya gotta have the web, thats not going away, people need the web.  Companies to keep an eye on: Google, Ebay, Craigslist, Amazon, and dare I say gaming companies.  Bring on the fears, lead me to the escape- games make the mark. Another decent play in the connectivity bucket would be Apple but right now its being battered over RIM's doom news, even still, July 11th, and the SDK development gold rush will chime in impressive sales and sweet rapid ownership of something shiny and applely goodness.  They will acquire more marketshare, they will push everyone outa the way to do it.

2. energy

Green, solar, hydro, natural gas, china, america, brazil, if they got energy solutions, they will have an impact on the market.  Oil in general may go down but the affects of what oil has done just in the past 3 months will take years to go away.

3. schools, advice, and retooling

The quest for more cash is on.  People will have to start retooling themselves, and that may mean more schooling, going back to school or getting some new skills somehow.  Folks in the biz of giving solid qualified advice in consultantcy and in social network platforms will be in.  You can't be paranoid by yourself, get a trusted friend to be paranoid with ya.

4. touch point assurance

I didn't call this research, because reseach by itself is just a book on someones desk stating the observed facts and its kinda lame in todays panic market.  Companies need more than just a human centered design centric outlook, they need to move faster, get on that consumer radar and stay there.  At work we talk about touch points, every point in the process of expericing a brands product or service.  I think touch points are now more important than ever.  Because the radar screen just dropped in radius by like a 100 fold.  Before when consumers were high on houses, jobs, energy and cash flow galore, the radar screen was massive, hell, we'd try anything and needed nothing.  Now that screen has shrinking by the day and our wants go into nice to haves when we can afford it, and the need is front and center.

Do people really ned you?  Do they NEED to have your service, your experience?  MUST they have it?  Well if you can't answer that question, odds are no.  If you can answer that question, ask it again at every touch point in your product or service experience.  Thats where the golden ticket is, filling in that gap and saying yes, you need it, you need me, at every point in the cycle, then, just then you'll be golden.

5. advertising dies and stories rise

I read the other day that Ad Age magazine had some snickering comment about todays advertising scene like, the big idea wasn't some new approach it was simply don't advertise.  That was the great idea, don't do it.  Probably because the market is so volitile that its debatable if it would be heard correctly or timely enough to matter. Advertising is continuing to go through this odd courtship with the web.  As blogs, social networking and sites like twitter and youtube take over the hive mind of millions of consumers, get real man, people aren't tuning into TV commericals or print ads or any kind of pushed advertising.  Consumers are digging into the experience of products and services, thats where you advertise.  Every Apple experience I had advertisies to me the potential future experiences I could have with them.  I tune into the web to tell me whats interesting based on my own interests, not by clicking sponored ads on google or any social networking site.  Simply put, if you're doing something right, it'll find its way to twitter or youtube and the masses will find out.  I would of never bought $1000 bucks in KORG music gear if it wasn't for Youtube.  Youtube told me about the Kaossilator, it told me about the KP3, and MiniKP, through fan videos alone the urge to overcame me and I had to have those products, not want, HAVE, need.  KORG's cost to ensure that success.. make a good product that delivers on an experience so much that it sells itself.

6. location based services

This one makes me laugh.  In 2005, 2006 I was a raving location based services nut.  I drew up countless ideas on why this market would take off and as usual, i was just ahead of the curve by a year or so.  But I tell you this, this market will BOOM.  And its not because its radically new, its not, it was around in 2005, tweaked and wondered about in 2006 but no one could get the experience down right.  Nokia tried and with the Symbian OS and all the players on the scene there in UK worked hard to try and push the idea of location based services up, but it never really took off.  First conusmers didnt know why they needed it, and secondly the experience still sucked and third, the tech of a GPS in the phone hadn't really arrived yet.  Even in Japan they toyed around with it, and its probably more solid there than anywhere here in the states.

Even still, thats all about to change come July 11th when that new Apple 3G iPhone arrives with that yummy sweet user experience and GPS inside.  All that goodness plus a smart savvy way to reach out the billions of bright folks on the planet and give them 70% of whatever they make in terms of an application on the iphone that does something on the scene of well anything, but notablely location based services, and I shit you not, there will be oooooodles of apps, press, reasons why and more. All the pieces line up, solid user experience, rabid fan base, rabid development base, incentive to develop, killer development kit, untapped unrealized unlimited possibilities in location based services, and all ya need to really do is fill a simple niche in the scene and you are golden.  And what the web itself filled what a few billion or so niches itself?  The market of where you are, what you can do, and what can happen next, thats what its all about and that scene, that game, that boom arrives on July 11th.

So yes, we're in the RED, the stock tickers scream at me as I write this, -368.41, market is down down down but not over.  Opportunity is out there, but you'll have to work harder to get on my radar and to snag any of my cash.  Don't bother posting billboards or crapping an expensive ad down my throat, I'll check the web, talk to friend, seek out a twitter or better yet, just research the crap outa ya to figure out whats best for me.  Meanwhile your experience better be solid, assured on every touch point, pleasing to no end, almost required, sho'nuff.  And in return, I'll give you loyalty, spread the word on youtube, tell a twitter or two, maybe even a blog bite or review.

Nuff said.

Back from Chicago...

Ahhh its good to be back from Chicago!  I'm catching up on all my twitters, pownces, friendfeeds, shared google reader pieces and blog bits.  Pandora is cranking away and I'm filing my expenses, much to do my friends much to do.

First, lets tap in what's been on my tube lately... stuff to note.

Drop world pretty cool little animation.

Mary's cat, Otis, god love her, seems super popular on youtube with 14,000 some views.  Most people think I'm torturing Oti here, but what they don't understand is that for the first year I met her I had to pet her with an oven mitt, cause she's that mean... but so cute.  And no, she's not abused, she lives like a queen in our house, she's oh so photogenic though.

More to come as things get settled...

Video transmitters and speciality research rigs.

Next week I'll be in Chicago on a unique assignment.  Research takes me all over the place and while for the past year or so I've been more on the support side of research with PRIME and making online research tools, next week I get to flex my custom research rig wonders.

We'll be mounting cameras on trucks, people and whatever else we can mount them on to capture movement and how people perform tasks.  Its quite an array of stuff this time.

Eyeglass cam

Overhead cam

Stage camera A

Stage camera B

.. and then me at this master control complex.. muahahahah.  Well, take the cameras in, put them in a quad, watch, control and annotate what I see.

My biggest concern here is the 5.82 ghz video transmitters.  I usually try and get COP gear, cops always have cool gear.  I used a nice DEA qualified microphone on a project last year when we watched people sleep, that was fun.  This time around we're using that again and these transmitters which I hope work out.

But transmitters don't like metal, which I'll definitely be around, and they prefer line of sight.  So its hit or miss on my transmitters, but like everything in research you prep, plan and then improvise your way outa a jam.

On my recording solution I debated between a standard DV deck vs an MPEG 4 DVR.  The DVR sounded good, but the control and flexibility are just not there for me.  Tape is famillar and faster I think vs the japanglish menus and complex settings of the DVR.

I get all my gear from Super Circuits, they have top notch sales and support and they're pretty straight on overall attitude and service.

Car manufacturers take the pinch.

Reading the headlines today I see a pattern...

- GM to close 4 truck & SUV plants

- GM to drop Hummer brand?

- Ford sales drop 16%

- Toyota sales drop 8%

- Chrysler sales fall 25%

Anyone wanna guess just how long it will be before we feel the wave of this affect in stock prices and general concern mayhem?  Two, three.. maybe six months?  I mean there will be layoffs and concerns of x y and z, which usually lead to stocks going up or down or just plain outa here.

GREEN is in like never before, not cause its the right thing, because its THE only thing left to do.  Gas is gonna beat us up, and we gotta be smarter with our choices... and not buy really expensive iMacs!  Bad Dan.

Mass transit is taking the hit as well as people folk to buses, trains and subway cars.  Air travel starts taking on the "people are freight" mentality, nickle and diming us along the way.  American Airlines with $15 bag checks to Delta charging $25 for phone reservations.  Soon we'll be lucky to stand in flights, lucky to use a restroom.

The siege is on land, sea, air.. not a good time for excess mindset.

All this bad news is gonna send the recession naysayers back the table gang, this economic downturn is gonna continue to fold in on itself with every 4 months or so we'll have more bad news compounded by the previous bad news.  Probably until we get Obama in office.

Context required and what's up next...

Well the Turks on Amazon's Mechanical Turk didn't take to data analysis so well.  It was a gamble and we lost.  Basically they lack the context of what the analysis is all about.  You can't ask a crowd to go deep without knowing what they're going deep on.  It's ok lesson learned.

Now this weekend I made a tough choice and upgraded my mac setup at home.  Not a mid range mac, or laptop that I probably should of gotten but hardly used, but a big ole massive upgarded mac.  I'm still struggling with a bit of buyers remorse cause its a huge gigantor like mac, its massive.  But its nice, but still I wonder did I really deserve that?

Pushing those thoughts aside this week we're getting down with hardware.  Building an oh la la camera rig for research.  So far so good, one of my SNC-RZ30N's is acting up but I may be able to salavage it.

I suck and the iMac 24" 3.06GHZ

There's very few things that really drive me nuts and one of them is when things are just not right, something is off, the alignment of what is, isn't working.

Five days ago the hard drive in my iMac 17" intel dual core died.  Did I have a backup?  Sorta.  Resolution?

Well first I went to the genius bar at the apple store, the feds stimulus package was burning a hole in my pocket, i guess it was time to spend it on a fix.

It had been just over 2 years since my first mac.  And of course it wasn't under warranty.  I was rather bummed when the mac dude told me to go to microcenter and have them fix my mac.  Ummm why can't you?  I said, basically not worth their trouble roughly.  That left a bad taste in my mouth as I drove over to microcenter.

Getting a straight answer outa microcenter sucked, sure they'd put in a drive, but they wouldn't warranty their own work unles they found out what was wrong first.  70 bucks for this, 70 for that, 60 for another thing.  Started adding up, all to add a new hard drive in an old mac, that was light years behind what was new.

New.  That gets me everytime.  Someday ill come back to this post and read about this old thing i thought was new.

So the mac went into repairs and the wheel began to turn.  First came all the little things i took for granted everyday, checking email, doing little things, having just access to the stuff on my mac, realizing all the stuff i didnt back up.

I found myself on my GF's PC alot staring at various configurations of new macs I could buy.  Maybe a laptop, I had been debating a laptop forever, but I keep telling myself I'm not really a laptop user, I never have been.

Soon the new 24" iMac's began to funnel into my mind.  I could get the 2.6, or 2.8.. I figured hell i'm gonna get new, don't skimp, lets do this right to last ya know.  Ok so 2.8, 500 meg drive upgrade and better video card and its pretty much the same price as the 3.06...

I was at easton today.  I labored hard over this purchase, am I that weak that I gotta have a mac?  Simple answer... yes.  I need my mac.  And it was only a matter of time before my old 17" just faded further and further into the void of oldness, no longer new.

In the end, a simple $200 investment could of saved me $$$$$, and thats Apple Care, if I had that, I wouldn't have this 24" 3.06GHZ beast on my desk, I'd still have my ole 17".  Apple care extends your warranty for everything on your mac for 3 years.  That would of saved me sooooo much.  But no, I have learned not to really trust extended warranties expect when it comes to macs, you gotta have them.  On the iMac's they are a must.  Lesson learned and it only cost me a few grand.

So, enough with the doom and gloom, let's talk about this new mac?  Well first, its all gravy, its top o the line, 3.06, nivida 8800 GS, 500meg hd, etc.. it feels huge, and the screen is just massive, like larger than large.  I dont really see a whole lotta reviews online.  I'll be putting up something on Youtube later, get into some goodness on this baby.

First thing that caught my eye was getting used to this new keyboard, which is kinda wonky but i'm getting used to it.  I like how quiet it is, and its the same keyboard on their laptops kinda, same clicklit like keys, thats good, maybe i'm get used to it and learn to like it.

I haven't done much so far other than just installing and learning my lesson on backing up and remembering what I used to do.
