nice panty!

Now playing: JDS - Rockstar

Feet

Leah at work wants to know “where do you find this stuff?”.  Good question, where DO I find this stuff?  What stuff?  I just placed an order at Neighborhoodies for a few fun goodies.  I found them in one of the many sources I get for edge goodness.  Edge being stuff that is on the edge of what we think is now, here, possible.  The ever shifting line of new.  Thats really all it is.  New, sometimes better, sometimes hype more often than not something that doesn’t deliver.  But when it does deliver, wow, then you get a slice of goodness.

I have my sources, the web, magazines, the web, those people, that cool building over there, the music i hear, the tunes i chase down, the ideals that i think motivate me, the books i read, the books i buy and then never read cause of time, the audio books i listen to, the editing i do for fun, there videos i take, the wonderings i have wondering about well, the stream.

I tried to explain to someone a long time ago, during the anime years working at ADV in texas.  I think it was after one too many late nites editing trailers or munching on chips and sippin margaritas.. but the stream is best visualized in my mind in the forms of artistic expression, much like something anime.

The stream is the now, its the ideas happening everywhere right now.  Picture it in the room, just passin thru.  Its right in front of you about 5–6’ feet away and about 5’ feet off the ground, its like a stream of light passing thru the room yer in right now.  Ok thats trippy eh?  Well think of it as one way of describing it really.  That stream is the collective, you can tap into it and see and hear or suck down some bandwidth, or jump in and ride.

When I’m really tuned into the stream I start experiencing alot of syncronicity.  I’ll read about yellow volkswagons in a magazine and then 10 minutes later after I opt’d to stop by the post office to mail a letter instead of just doing it at home.. what do I see?  A yellow volkswagon.  Sometimes it’ll hit me like a wave and i’m writing endless notes in my many to do lists, ideas colliding on what ifs, could bes, and wonder hows.

Sometimes the closer i get to technology the more the stream leaves me.  Its like you need that outer edge of goodness, theres that edge word again.  You want to be the expert climber that doesnt have to climb every day.  Sometimes ya just go fishing despite what all the other climbers think when they see you fishing there wondering “why isnt he climbing” but you are climbing… in yer mind.  So dont get too close all this infotechnology, this blogsphere, sure its awesome, its amazing, but we dont live in here a 100%, we take what we want and we live, understanding what people TAKE out and GIVE back and remix, again that other popular word right now, understanding that and the whys behind it, and you will go far my friend.

Sometimes I think my resources are too taxing, too expensive, too costly for my time.  But I cant drop them.  I’ve done it before, unsubscrided to that magazine only to start purchasing it at the bookstore.  Trends emerge in odd places, there isnt one portal for newness, its spawning all over the place.  Nice thing about blogs is that people are talking about it, expressing it, pondering it, using this space to help them refine, remember, reflect upon it.  That alone makes it worth it, to dive back into this moment, to dive back into this experience.  That is the utter glory of the blog.

word power and my delicious habbits

EDITED…..

Ok my last post was messy.  Sorry bout that.  Just happens sometimes, ya get all jazzed up on yer findings that ya sorta space out…

Words.  They are powerful.  They are so amazing, so useful, I wish I knew more words.  I wish I knew all the words that would be tags.  Sometimes I surf endlessly thru delicious and wonder what's another /tag/"something" i could try.  Could it be a key word like "design" or "software", too vague, how bout "macmini" or "imac" thats getting better, what about "lbs" or gps" how now were divin even deeper into specific interests.

How do I know what something is called without knowing its callsign, its key word?  I don't.  Its a shot in the dark.  Its the one thing that gets me about tagging, how do I know what tags interest me.  Sure I can start off rough and dig down like i currently do, but I wish i had a source for trendy words.

Idea: A simple RSS feed that I could tap into that would give me possible keywords that soon to be possible tags to shortly have of course tagged data to them.  That would be handy.

Ya know a random key word generator turned tag sniffer would be fun.  It'd take common and popular word occurances from the 14 million blogs on the planet, filter out the words that we see every day and track words that occur over time, first in an instance, then in a trickle, then in a stream, possibily indicating popularity, it would then try to sniff out on delicious via simple tries in "/tag/(keyword)" etc.  And when it strikes gold, it sends me an email or something saying "four new keywords discovered, they are x, y, z, etc".

The Joy of Digging

To me part of the lure of delicious is not knowing for sure what im looking for.  Sometimes its a jist.

Like today I started doing some research on QR code, the japanese 2d barcode for cellphones.  Its becoming big over there and a friend of a friend was curious about doing some cell phone marketing here in the states, and then it hit me, hey what about cell phone bar codes, i recall seeing a blurb on the net awhile back, what are they called..

First i hit google and search "cell phone barcodes" then i get some specifics.. and now i'm looking for the signal in the noise, google has a ton of noise, i want the signal, i want what stands out. Found one: QR code.

Hmmm that thing could offer some interesting marketing opportunities.  Now lets check, delicious, QR tag,.. lets see.. survey says:

http://del.icio.us/tag/qr

well first off, qr is a tag, score, secondly, it seems to be quaker religious related as well.. neat.  Ok so what, what about qr, any references to qr as in qr code, yes.. bingo.

http://del.icio.us/tag/qr?page=5  in particular the list link listing "semacode"

Now i can do two things, i can either check out the various links related to qr code, and no doubt i will, but delicious also offers me another tasty bit of info > like minds surf together.

A few of these links in here are also posted by 128 other people, i could if need be, check out thier boommarking practices to discover other possible like connections with interests of my own.  This to me is huge.  No one single person can be everywhere really, so dont, let everyone be everywhere where you wanted to be.

Now granted these 128 other people could be drive by taggers, see a link, tag it, no sweat, semi interest.  Or they could be just reporters or paid info houd bloggers surfing on the new or casual enthusists, still my trend sniffing nose tells me they also could be on to something else like this edge type emerging trend.

128 people could tap me into another 1200 people if im not careful.  Thats why getting to "qr" tag in the first place is so important in regards to it being a known tag by delicious.  It gets 75% of the way there.  I'm two steps away from serious popcorn.  Google is too vast to find me what i want.  I don't want what a corporate website deems i should know, i want what people thought was important enough to bookmark.  Like minded people, people like me.  And even starting vague in delicious itself is too vast.  Tapping into something generic as like "design" or "usability" or "cellphones" everyone and their mother has that tag, no, qr, thats specific to a set ideal, concept, and in most cases to a few concepts, so far its quaker relgion, and qr code and like coding systems.

In a quick glance I begin to think that even the link with 128 other like posters is too big.  Lets find the small sample, narrow my search even more so.

Ok heres one, its on the http://del.icio.us/tag/qr?page=5 page, 5th posting from the top, "mobile01 and then a slew of japanese characters", also posted by 11 other people.  Check out the link, ya more concentrated specific info, good find.  What else do i see?  other like tags, not just qr, qrcode, mobile, tools.  Well we know mobile, and tools, will give us far too many results in delicious, but qrcode one word, that could be good one.   How bout investigating those 11 other like people.  Sure, thats doable in a quick burst of "open in a new tab window" thx firefox!

Right away we see the list of the 11 other like minded people and quickly i see more possible tags, qr_code, keitai (mobile in japanese), QR-codes, QRcode, and then a few curve balls....what could archangel, conquest, and data_culture have to do with this bookmark posting?  That just rings my bell really, he'll get the first look.  Now I can either dive into that persons whole tag listing or go after say, "data_culture".. lets try that.  http://del.icio.us/slavin/data_culture

Wham Bam, now thats a tasty bit of bookmarking, this guy/gal and me could talk for hours on all these links.  Some excellent finds here:

gaming stats

http://www.buddyping.com/features.php big find for those in the sammy project

a bit of surfing and find another tag instance: http://del.icio.us/slavin/area/code

More interesting finds.

What an excellent find.  Tons of links to surf and they "hit" the right spot.

the map

Ok by now i've lost many of you, yer gone, but those who are still with me, ok I agree, i've veered off the original qr tag path, sorry its the linker in me, i wanted these links remembered somewhere.  In any case, i did find what i wanted more signal, less noise.  Sure you could debate ummm theres alot of noise here, well thats "like" noise, which is better than just noise in general.

More on this later... i'm still surfing and qr code?  Oh ya baby, we're gonna get into that soon.

round up

Well I'm finishing up Anatomy of Greed, Unshredded Truth of Enron.  Ok sure Enron is old news, I was a bit curious and well it somehow ended up on the top of SimplyAudiobooks list, so be it, i shall listen.  I like this audio book service, I kinda need a longer commute to work though, hardly made it thru 1 disc going to and from work this week, yet in a few hrs of warcraft i burned thru the whole 5 disc series.  Heh.  Freakonomics btw, was an excellent audio book.  This Anatomy of Greed is pretty perdictable, ya know whats gonna happen, some interesting insights into their management and HR/PR practices though.

Late nite snackin on, Google SMS, SimplyHired..looks a bit like Indeed, Start.com a RSS msn attempt looks cool, digg it yet is it like pubsub?, pzizzzz power napper beta!, GTD with next action, and PSP gonna give me fire ant potential? does sony see what's coming?  More Yahooo stuffDelcious Montser maker joins Apple.

a fist full of beta

In this weeks episode.. A FIST FULL OF BETA

BetaAnything and everything that has been cool as of late is in beta.  Slap beta on it and you are almost certain to attain immediate hype!  Hype is what makes the net world go around.  Beta is like the door mat to open source success, its the open arms of “were not sure whats happening but come join us..”, if anything really, beta is a sure success motivator for peeps.  I mean ya open yer code up, which is good, well within reason, then you get the masses to innovate for you, even better, and then you get the ride the constant buzz wave of being in beta.  Soon yer invited to all the beta parties and yer in the new buzz game.  Speaking of which I need to get back to the buzz game and see how my buzzstock is doing.

What is on the flooz radar lately?  Spot any interesting trends?  Any must have gadgets?  Any drive by need be’s?  Hmmm as of late i’ve been consumed by work and being sick.  Not much trend festering happening really.  I have been thinkin about the mac video effort still.  I always get these grand ideas in my head.  I think its my brains way of telling me i really need to buy something, cause i’ll feel so much better then, but more often than not its like joy of spending that consumes me.

Ok so back on trendwatch, what is happening, hmmmm.. we’ll I’d say gaming is up!  For world of warcraft that is, china’s release has exploded and now we have a whole new slew of folks hacking the heck out of wow.  I’d say hacking is in.  Not that it ever wasnt for the underground scene, but generally hacking is new cool word used in marketing, especially for book titles, you want to make sure yer book catches the spotlight, slap “hacking” on there and its gaurenteed a slot in the review list.  I used to think hacking was about phones or pcs, but you can hack anything these days.  I’m waiting for the 101 Hacking yer Home Blender book, i’m sure its coming.  I will say there are some ingeinous video hacks out there, I need to get that book.

Video Blogging is on the rise.  Its trying hard to weeen its way out of obscruity.  Perhaps my talking crap videos could be syndicated for all to see.  Probably a good time to buy stock in Serious Magic, their creation tool is a snap for video bloggers, cool quality results too.  Next up I need to see if serious magic can read my MP4 sony videos.

The fire ant beta is out!  Yes beta action boys and girls, get on board!  Pretty cool so far, i sorta dread the download all fuctionality, its clearly what i want to do yet with all the feeds you could be attached too, itd be like downloading a serious chuck of video to yer doorstep.  Lots o video that is.  Especially considering all the anime kids tied to the service.  Still I like idea, could be next big app to be analyzed, toyed with, and throughly ripped off by the masses, or msn, google, and yahoo.  I’d like to see tagging be incorporated into the app as well, a better system to help address the whole signal to noise issue would be nice.  I feel like i’m stepping into a whole crap load of video bloggers on the planet, who do i want, why do i want them and whats to offer etc.. its hard to tell.  Trial and error?  I suppose.

PS: I’m currently addicted to: Now playing: ILS - Angels  >> amazon

Let’s see watching wise, i’ve been consuming the Smallville and Carnivale DVD box sets.  Good stuff there.  Still playing World of Warcraft, I keep finding ways to spend gold and not save it, bad cow, bad bad cow.

Man it is seriously difficult to keep up with all these blogs.

iTunes

What is it about a lower case letter first that calms the savage consumer?  I seriously thing theres something to lower case, and i’ll make a case for it even.. ha!  seriously, though… don’t i see more.. human than CAPS?!  Anyways I finally got around to buying some tunes off itunes.. and damn thats addicitive.  They still dont have selection i’d want them to have when it comes to strange electronic and dj groove tunes, still, its getting better.  It’s so nice to pick and choose what you want, even at a buck a track.

G5 on the horizon

I’m still eyeing the G5 iMac for video production.  I just got the bug for motion and final cut pro, heck even the iDVD app looks killer.  I dunno, we’ll see.

GenerationNext

It was generation M, at least we’re seeing bits of the M and now known as the NEXT gen that must be online now.  Insta-nowness is seeping into all aspects of the culture.  Lagged in the drive thru lane, no its not that i had to wait, it was like i was lagged out getting my fries.  Must have now!  I like talking about generation now, generation next, generation woah what was that?  After work a few of us get together and discuss NEXT effect on our various projects.  Some little to no effect, others, ya.. some significant effect.  To better understand, to better know what is happening there, gotta go back to the source.  Need to do another day in the life study on how this NEXT gen is forming.

Project Sammy

Deep in dan archives are hundred ideas that never manifested.  Why?  Like anything, time, attention to detail, attention to focus, attention to just do them, i dunno, several ideas written on a napkin.  Some of them are video creations, cartoons, show concepts, scripts, songs, beats, art ideas, live action gator murder mysteries, and some are applications, net projects, websites, ideas, expression, ideas without form and function.  Some are gems that just get parked away on the shelf, I can go right back to them cause the passion flame is fiery enough to easily get back into the “YA” that first created them.  Sammy is one of those projects.  At first the tech didnt exist to support Sammy, however now with mobile phones being what they are and the rise and total consumption of all that is instant messaging on the planet, and with tasty things like RSS running rampant, perhaps now, Sammy could flourish.  What is Sammy?  Yet another idea that well, wep couldnt support.  Heck, i dunno even if the infrastructure out there exists to pull what i need down to make Sammy happen.  Clearly Sammy clones are out there.  Now do they make any money?  Thats a big if…. how do I make free work.

Today's three rules are for those who want to be in the business of establishing a new category by providing free goods or services via the Internet. This is an exponential-curve hit business. The vast majority who try it will fail. The success of the few is spectacular.

The twin lessons of Internet Bubble One are that the free strategy CAN work spectacularly because of friction-free distribution via the Internet AND that the free strategy USUALLY fails.

The winners have three things in common:

1. They lead their category;
2. There is almost no incremental cost to them of providing another unit of whatever it is they give away free;
3. They change the way their users do something which is significant to the users.

The losers fail one or more of these three tests.

… taken from here.  3 will be tough since everything is soo fleeting these days.  So more on Sammy as it develops but a few peeps at work are interested in helping me develop it.

Fish & Hami

Another idea, this time a comical strip much like Dark Kitty, which was like hello kitty meets dark city the movie, yet in the style of south park is on the table.  I created a rough story board in video, wrote up some descriptions and presto leah’s man Josh started drawing.  Its pretty incredible to see my ideas my words be manifested in to actual things.  Next up Chap here at work spotted them and asked about animating them, damn that’d be awesome.  The plan is to create a 2–3min intro to a series kinda thing.  Song is done, edit is a rough, just need about 10 background plates to choose from, a few cool characters, insert some compositing, some dynamic effects and we got material folks.  I love working with a talented artist.  It also pains me to see them struggle.  I feel like were on the opposite sides of the tracks.  I have all these ideas, TONS, yet i cant really draw, well you know, and josh is the opposite in a sense, he can draw really well but doesnt have all the others i got.  Perhaps together we can create and get into something even better down the road.  Maybe land him a animation job or something.

Blog Spotting Round 1 FIGHT!

Cool alternate use of quake, I LIKE IT! vs No FAKES >>> winner NO FAKES!, thats a hilarious spot, gives me a good idea.

RFID is the mark of the beast vs Slave to Gaming Buck >>> winner RFID and 666 go together, i mean come on, we’ve known about gaming thing since EQ ever arrived really, but RFID the sign of the devil, thats material people!

RSS for feed chow vs DarkNet >>> winner DarkNet, first of all nice book title, second, its true, hollywood is coming!

MySpace is now NewsCorp’s / FOX’s Space vs copilot? >>>> winner copliot, why? cause its in beta!  gratz tom on the sale.

Storyboard for the tablet vs Strange Days & Extracting Cat Videos >>>> winner, damn this is a tough one, i’ll go with cat brains.

bits and things all good

I finished listening to Blink by Malcom Gladwell.  Wow, another awesome book.  Some great things in this book, if you liked Tipping Point, then you’ll definately like Blink.

I started listening to audio books while gaming last week.  Listening to non-fiction books like Blink while gaming actually works out pretty darn well.  Its probably what I need right now to catch up with all the books/audio books i need to catch up on.

Freak

Now I’m listening to Freakonomics, another great listen I might add.  I went ahead and tried out a netlfix like audio book service to get my fill of audiobook goodness.

Goggle Hacks Abound!

Wired is calling REMIX nation, or the age of remix is upon us, but basically anything hackable is very in at the moment on the net.  Fueled by big boys, hacking is definately here to stay.

GPS hacks, real time tracking, – this I need to do.  Good google-map-hack-blog.

The normal peeps have been chatting a bit about tech like this, the moblie command center, cool little box, could be used for our retail rig offer, if fast enough, could provide clients with real time feeds of store enviroments while we test.  Junxion.

pristine fiction

Words, phrases, all things being equal the goodness is in the words.  Today’s morning ramble is brought to you by Normal, the friends that remind you that yer still just the 4th best doom player in the bunch.

Ok so what’s new?  Back from China and moving on into the data analysis phase of the project.  Woooha!  I say watching all this video and checking out our data and images, wow, this is crazy work.

On the blogosphere…. at last, a fix for the tablets suffering from the memory leak in SP2 – CHECK IT!

Debating…

Beautyshot_macmini_050111  VSSony-PSP-front-back

I love the “hacks” movement currently forming on the PSP front.  Lots of cool hacks out there, and it doesnt seem that bad of a device really. On the other hand, I need to get a mac someday and experience the final cut pro side of me, and more so the apple motion side of me, so really swap that mac mini picture with an imac, heh.  PSP wins at the moment due to price, its much much much cheaper and its like plug and play compatibiliy with my Sony DSC-M1.

Silkscreening!  Thats the next project on dan’s list of never ending ventures of creation!  Yes kids silkscreening, I am sick and tired of the mundane plaid, pastel and boring ass clothes that big and tall people all over this great land of ours must endure.  Sure i can wear the occasional and often inspiring hawaiian shirt, but then its back to solid colors.  Lets face it, fashion for the big and tall, hell taste, hell culture, hell anything even remotely wild and franky randy is null in void for big people.  Nope we are cast into the cellars of “well maybe we’ll make you an extra size of the classic nike logo shirt”.  Yes I’m sick of it, i’m sick of wearing brands, logos, or shirts that say “HEFY GUY, BIG MAN, BIG DOG, WIDE LOAD”, ok scrap the wide load, besides i’m really just tall ya know.  Still i will play by big and tall casual male’s rules no more!  I will PAY thru the nose for my own creations, if i want a tall button down shirt that says CRAZY MUTHA FUCKER on it, well I say, lets make it.

I’ve always had a thing for fashion design, hence the fashionpixel i once had that domain.  Fashion is a good source for inspiration.  It reminds you of the stream of ideas that is constantly pushing thru.  And ive had sooooo many shirt ideas in my head i need to get them down.  I’ve always wanted to learn silkscreening really.  So be it!  I guess i could always get this too: 10k shirt printer!

RSS in debate lately, with friends that is.. the ongoing war of RSS what is it, and why, lingers and lingers.. some good uses here.

Delicious’ness’popularity cube. And here’s a cool RSSjobs site. Tapping into this is also pretty cool, er, good mojo.

More on the podcasting front, audioblog, and itunes 4.9 can do screencasting/video blogging as well.  Also fireant is pretty cool too.

July 02, 2005

just visiting...

Catching up on all my blogs to read lately.  Lots of cool things to play with.  Let's begin, shall we?

Remeber podcasting?

Yes Chen thats podcasting, thats the ipod and people creating audio broadcasts on their pcs and then releasing them to the web and then other people can subscribe to your broadcast, or your file.  Make sense?  Its basically like you create yer own radio show kinda thing.  Personally I havent paid too much attention to it, I was "podcasting" long before we had to create a word to describe it as podcasting.  I wasnt doing the RSS part of it, but still, geeze, thanks internet for yet again tellin me how it is.

Anyways, in regards to podcasting, ODEO is out in beta.  Hopefully I'll get on the fast track to making my own content/radio/like shows on there soon.  I checked out this nifty podcast generating piece of software called Propaganda too, maybe Bob should check out that.  In fact, I dont know if anyone I know is even into podcasting other than Bob.  Yesterday was the first day I really sat down and listened to a show, did that while playing World of Warcraft.  Actually made for a nice combination.  I should have a few podcasts out soon.  Stay tuned!

Shuffle Me

I've been thinking about picking up an ipod shuffle FM transmitter lately too.  Ya know, for in car goodness.

Location Based Services

I've got alot of ground to catch up on in regards to this emerging field of interest.  Location based services such as chat and social networking are on the rise.  Heck google gobbled up dodgeball awhile back, we know we'll see more activity in this sector.  Check out Mates, a project from the university of michigan.

Reality Mining

We've done data mining, or text mining in research before, the idea of reality mining, right now especially with much of todays youth and "connected" culture exploring the world of tags in such applications as flickr and delicious not to mention the whole camera conencted phone masses exploding and this is no doubt one of the longest sentences on this journal entry and all, well anywas its all going to be very exciting.  Theres alot to be gained right now as researcher, alot of could be fake of course as well, is the web a true representative equall to our own form?  Probably not however that wont stop people wondering.  We're getting closer and closer to the people far more now than we've ever had before.  Seeing people thru pictures, blog entries, music selections, you name it, we're tuned in.

Trendspotting

One of my favorite all consuming activities is reading, watching, spotting, seeking, diving, absorbing, mentioning, following, providing, provoking, starting, and remixing the wonder of trends.  They are everywhere and like anything else I need them, and I find groovy somewhat related online tools for them as well, like urltrends, check it!

Video blogging

I don't want to burden Troy's servers with my excessive video blogging so i've been checking out a few the video host like services on the web.  Theres a few out there.  Currently i'm experiementing with Vimeo, however, the clip i just uploaded, straight from my Sony DSC-M1, doesnt appear to be playing back...WAIT.. FIXED, now plays back fine.. thanks Quicktime!  I'll be sure to add more to viemo as time goes on, or find alternate hosting services for my clips.  I like the idea of tagging the files like I do with photos on flickr, I wish flickr just did video as well really.

I need to upgrade the Avid at work, I want mixed resolutions, and mp4 editing.. Currently i'm just DV, but that Xpress is growin on me.  Course I could just get final cut pro for the mac mini and try that route really.

A few good links.

check out this, searchscapes, or newsmap,

Best products of 2005, i see alot of JBL and Apple in there, and tap into the tech 100 while yer there, if interested

since i've got china on the brain I keep running into more and more interesting reads online about it, concerns of the pollution which is one of the big issues over there, whether or not they can build their own silicon valley, possible but they need to protect the copyright holders i think, and a word about the boys coming of age, very true, some big concerns over that as well.

krispy kreame

Have you ever ordered a brew box from Krispy Kreame?  Well don't, its alot of coffee and they give ya like sixteen coffee cups, i guess its all good really, they didnt have hot tea though, so i had to do coffee.  Didn't really have to, "have to" but is was early am, and my internal clock isnt working yet really.

I've been catching up on all my blogs to read, images to surf, tunes to listen too.  I miss Beijing.  China, I was in frickin China, gang!  Thats amazing.  Not many folks can say they've thought more than 2 seconds about china and I was there!  Of course many people have been asking me about my stay there, what I did, what i saw, what'd I think about it.  Its all still settling in.  Going thru all the flickr stills and my video clips help.

I've been working on a music video concept for fun, a slice of Beijing thru my lens, something fun, groovy, dan like, etc.

Beijing seems like a fading distant memory for me.  I can still city the city in my mind though.  Driving around town im tempted to drive like the taxi drivers heh, whats so bad about riding the middle white line really.

I asked Chen before I left what she'd like to journal about.  We have alot of new readers on floozyspeak lately.  Many i'm sure are not used to my stream of conscience type journaling.  I always wonder if i will inadvertly offend someone some how, i'm sure its possible, but never my intent.

Chen said "how bout a comparison between beijing and usa", more so where I live in the usa.  Columbus, Ohio is a small town compared to Beijing.  You see people in Beijing, in Columbus you need to really work to see people, find them at parks, at malls, but generally you dont see people outside moving around much.  Its sunny and warm here, last night we watched the fireworks and I saw friends at work for the first time in awhile, it was good sorta, to be back.  Good in that well i'm back and theres things to do, bad in that I miss Beijing.

I've been debating another trip to Japan lately.  Watching the Starwood Hotel channel at the hotel in Beijing didn't help, it was endless hours of "go see kyoto in japan" channel on there that gets me thinking about Japan.  I'd like to see Kyoto someday, but I'd love to go back to Beijing, so open, so vast, so free, so crazy heh.

It'll be a few more days before I can really get into the deep thoughts over china, and more so beijing, i dont know what to say really, i was there, the people we met there were great, we made friends there, its a big city, a big culture and its moving at million miles an hour.  China is definately here to stay.  Growth is amazing there, and sooooo much potential for biz there, yet so much potential for freakout as well.  You can leap from a old school 50's mindset into how now brown cow 2005 cyber me baby culture without burning out a few brain cells.

I've been thinking about it.  Japan is polished, you feel like you are in the future there at times.  If the USA is in say the year 2005 on the good side of it, I'd say Japan is in the year 2007, and China...?  China is in 1985.  They are behind in polish, mentality, and ways.  Not really a bad thing its just whats represented, and considering that 20 years ago they were like 1949 they've LEAPED forward a great deal already.  You just dont get the sense of pure arrogance in china, you get longing, you get hunger, you get thirst, you get the raw forms of want and need.  In Japan, back in 1999, I got the sense that Japan wasnt about want or need any more, it was about access, we have, its here, future is merely a door near by.  In the states the need is gone, everything is want, choice, we choose the path we want, we dont have to need anything, the basics are a given.  In china, the basics are just now getting to the point where they are barely on the edge of given.  There is still this sense of need.

Whats another way to visualize my view of the three cultures?  USA is cd disc, China is tape deck, Japan is holographic data.  But in 10 years, USA wil be holographic data, China will be holographic data, and Japan will be holographic data.  So really, look out folks, china is comin thru!

I saw this online today, hello beijing!

Day 11 - Operation China, Escaped

Chicago, I slept the bulk of the 13 hr flight, the 2 glasses of champane
and wine surely helped, I'm ready to arrive and be one with my domain, I
hate being herded around like cattle.

Its been awhile since I've read The LionTheWitch & TheWardrobe, someone
next to me is reading that. I haven't blogged via the sidekick in
awhile.

Tmoblie didn't really work in china aside from text messages, so much
for that service.

China. It seems so far away right now. While I fell alseep to tunes on
my ipod my mind edited music memories of china, the temple of
everything, the surgeons, the streets, the people, and chen. I skipped
from song to song trying to find the best hook. Lyrics or no lyrics,
deep beats or acoustical bliss. What would serve this memory best, what
song would work.

My chipped tooth feels sharp.

I think I'm destined for something more than this crowded airport
terminal offers me. Already I can over hear the conversations about
work, the chaos of x y and z. I'm a bad listener by trade, I hear too
much. I long for the bliss of a perfectly cooked outback steak. I
welcome the warm hug of my sweet mary, I can see her eyes now, her
smile, her skin.

Seeing the news bothers me. In china I was semi cuttoff. Not bombarded
by the constant onslaught of american media.

Should I turn inward? What will keep me alive, well and fresh? Dare to
be fresh I say. Dare to be bold, to skip down that street, to sing that
song and to simply tell it like it is.

I need to dream more. Hard to dream lately.
