Ok ok ok.. ya know how ya get a bug in ya that says, ya this piece of gear will be ultimate?  Well always let work buy it for you.  LOL, so we have this new gig coming up and i’ll be going to China to “observe” not to do “research” cause “research” is a bad word there.  Yes thats right i’ll be watching.  So this requires a new camera rig, why?  Cause we live to create yet new and more interesting camera rigs.  Handheld camera can only do so much, and typically its shakey as all hell.  Then you got standard tripod vision which gives you no detail.  So this time around i said “hey lets try varizoom folks”  and thus the Stealth Zoom & Mono Pod was purchased… and?  Well its like anything in research its give and take, its interesting yet not the perfect fit.  I’ll have to mess with it.

Ooooo neat eh?  Actually its dead simple but we need something simple and stealthy on this no “research” project.  Sadly I fear this will not work.. and I may end up like this..

Handsfree

Ain’t I cute!  I need to lose alot of weight and sex change operation, but its possible.  Still this is kinda too much like Channel 4 TV on the scene for me.  That plus we’re not doing “research” people. I see this and it makes me think this…

I’m diving in!  Tell me about your family?  UP CLOSE CUE..ACTION!  Actually this isnt gonna work.  I wanted to find an easier way to get up to the gist of what was happening in an easier no shake way.  Of course we’d love a full motion control rig.. but thats like 6k using dv cameras, and it defeats the whole “stealth” mandated approach.  Sigh, its always the same really, we wanna land on mars and teach them english, all we have is a stick of gum and some duck tape, oh and we’re buried alive.. now go!

Now I could use the retail rig cameras, those are slick, but traveling with them, getting them there and set up, they look like NASA, that WILL be stopped at customs.  Nope.  I’d probably be the better setup but then again those need a serious operator.  Theres no easy fix here.  Sadly thats the reality and i’m gonna get the usual response.. “dan we need to be on mars by noon man.. what have you come up with the stick of gum, we used up all the duck tape on our legs…”

Again it always comes down to the same gist of reality banging on yer front door, you need to make compramises, its simple as that.  Management hates that word, I understand sure, but its the fact.

We seem to live to re-invent the process every time.. i must decide best course of action.  Tripod is essential… actually no.. you could go with a desktop-pod and the mono pod for interviews and then the sessions in the room we’d be recording.  I’m activially trying to stay away from tripods actually, they make research boring.  Hey look a nice wide shot of the room, neat.  Wow, its been there now for 4hrs… great.  Get that camera and move around, lemme see things, but let me see them with no shake heh.  Thats what i want.
