lost on the small screen
Last night I had dinner with my folks and Father Dave. Like all dinner events, ya start out with the basics of chit chat and work yer way up into conversations of epic porportions. Right away my folks were stirin up the basics of Rockwell home chatter.. this butter is low fat, no calorie, hardly any SUFFERING! haha.. I love that. This is better butter for you, you won't cry, i promise. Gotta love Mom. So as the drinks flowed Father Dave and I stumbled in the conversation of the PASSION, what'd we think etc. He told me at home, among the other priests its a split, 2 like it, 2 don't.. he himself liked it. I asked him if he thought it was anti-semitic since thats all the rage these days. "well not any more than the new testement" heh. True. I thought so too.
Dinner progressed and Papa's signiture pork roast was wonderful. Dad can cook a pork roast soooooo well. I even got a few garlic cloves.. yes! The conversation shifted as the dinner went on, vatican this, pope that. Dave and I had a good conversation on the Pope actually. I got a lot of questions answered and generally, that whole papal system is kinda whacked haha. I could sense he thought it did too but its like much of the old church, its just old old old way old.
Then it came. Movie time. As Mama serves up coffee and ice cream Papa instructs me, #5 son to present tonights movie. They always call me for movies. "What have you gotten lately, anything good?" I used to buy dvds all the time, lately I havent bought too many. I did however get Lost In Translation and my mother had been asking about it. I brought it over cause Matrix Revolutions, well Matrix in general just flew over my folks, its one of those movies my mother nods off to, actually she fakes like the dishwasher is stuff and leaps up to go fix it and never returns, then its me and my father and his questions heh.
I was a bit worried about Lost in Translation though.
Why? Something was lost in the transfer of Lost in Translation to dvd. Its a movie you really need to experience in a theater and I cant explain why. I remember seeing it in the theater and recalling how awesome it was, it just had life, it had substance, it didnt follow the typical hollywood route, it made me think, made me love, made me wonder etc. It was a great flick. When i bought it on dvd and watched it again i was in agony..... i fell asleep. Ha. So my folks? They gave it about 15mins which most of that time was moving about doing stuff only occassionally seeing what was happening. Then they sat down and i could see it in my fathers eyes..... he was looking for the action. My mother had the glazed look of, something important is happening here im sure of it, but lets all have conversation instead. Its simple really. My father can watch baskeball, golf and bond. Thats it. My mom can watch gene kelly dance the nite away, any musical ever made and thats it. Thats the scope of attention grabbing substance. With some room im sure but roughly thats it. Father Dave is trendy, hes a now priest! But he too is pretty easily distracted. Lost in Translation went down in flames after only 30mins.
I can take that, what i have a hard time taking is the assumptions of the audience. Like youve seen a great love story and the guy next to ya has seen 12mins of it, doesnt know how it ends but starts tellin everyone their assumptions of where its going when its not going there. I had to get outa there really. I needed to get some sleep and this is where sons and daughters typically exit anyways. And i could take all the ones i was hearing "ok so he sleeps with her, he has the affair? typical.." "no no thats not what happens, you have to watch.." "the bar scene is getting old..." "so they just talk thats it?" its really just a volley of questions throw not at you but into the air. I'm always dumb enough to try and answer them cause i want folks to just watch!! WATCH IT!! ha...
So it was a good dinner and a good visit, what i learned again is that the movie selection never works haha. Next time bring a remastered version of West Side Story or the latest Bond heh.
