angry

today i feel angry.. no reason, just feel angry. maybe angry isnt the word, disconnected maybe? no.. im connected but i dont care, im careless today, dont care, dont care, dont care... well i do care about that one thing....

maybe i feel empty, maybe thats it. actually this a good creative place to be, being empty means yer ready for whatever, maybe its whatever that i feel today..

what words come to mind that describe me today:

carefree, edgy, speedy, wishful, wonderful, good, planned, attack, focused, strange, disconnected, obtuse, rectangluar, odds but not the ends, quick, to the point, oh really i hadnt heard that, always on but often off, no preach, wheres the kitty, bring the cat, pavement, rain, cold, lost in what i know yet the path is here and im on it, black, grey, pixel inch percision, order in shapes, order in focus, depth of field not neccessary i can imagine, claws, angst, removed, dripping, spilled milk, exhaust, 3rd gear, torched, understated, stripes and paint chips, yellow, orange, dark green...

ya that about sums it up

hmmm

ya know text, like this, ie a font and some letters looks ok until ya do this: «Åß?dL?Te??°WýLл or ¤°Su?§eT¤ß£ø?d˰¤... maybe i could that that too.. ¤°Flo?ozy§pe¤a£øKd°¤ ... But whats the point?

Ok to each their own ya say ok sure, i suppose, be tolerant of others you say, ok ya right alright, still bothers me. It's like ived logged into l33twaresuperdoodeASSkittenSoFT! Thats awesome! What's it mean to have a name written like "¤°Flo?ozy§pe¤a£øKd°¤" it says i'm a being with a higher state of mind maybe.

It just find funny staring at the "whos on" of flickr and seeing what looks to me like code. Quite honestly really I've been a bad flickr, I use the web site plenty but the actual chat is bad thing at work basically, cant have it up all the time. And its not cause ¤°Flo?ozy§pe¤a£øKd°¤ folks are bothering me though generally i'd raze the hell outa them in chat if saw them, to me ¤°Flo?ozy§pe¤a£øKd°¤ is no different that the swm16swp names or the iamtoohot4cock names or bigassikesmanypigeons name.... i kinda like the pigeon one.

The other thing that gets me about flickr is groups, 900 exist and folks probably talk in oh.. about 7 of them. Least it feels that way. And i keep getting invites to groups where theres no discussion happening nor is the group active in flickr interface was up... so why does that group exist?

Its a placeholder for people who feel strongly about X subject or X cool title or X redundant FlickrCentralLikeGroupThatAlreadyExistsButWeNeedAnotherOe.

Thats the group of more talk thats better talk than those who talked about talking! I decline those groups constantly and keep getting invites or "why havent you joined?" .... i need to know why im present. My am I blogging this now, im generating content on a day that will most likely suck for me. But I gotta give the people something.

I guess these little things about flickr bother me. And Breedster, I went down in flames there, just haven't had the time to get into it. Work, er this project in particular has zapped my playfulnetness. Soon however it shall be over and i will evolve into.........¤°Flo?ozy§pe¤a£øKd°¤ dude!!

following up on viral

Here's a nice piece on Viral Marketing from BrandChannel. Hmmmm 5 phones gah.. and context is everything. Hmmm maybe i should attend trendwatching. Ooo another good blog. Eat more tv. I've been waiting on holograms. Vizoo... that stuff is very cool!

ac2 vs lin2

Aside fromm the obvious there's always something about stickyness that appeals to me. Core values translated into a sticky taste pie size. What the hell am i talking about? Lately i've been beta testing games and just playing games really. What appeals to me, why am I here, what doesn't work and why.

Lineage 2 vs Asheron's Call 2. L2 has the newness factor and pretty avatars, ac2 is old habbit tried and true. Game wise however theres one thing i really like about ac2's design. The developers know its dying.. they know its ending, popularity is off, the user base is moving to new enviroments etc. A game cant win by eye candy and game play alone, eventually it gets old. Especially with a user base that has excelled beyond your vision. Folks are heft high level peeps in a world that wasnt really crafted for them.. adding new content can only do so much when the base of the game is done basically. Still it has one redeeming element i have expereineced and it doesnt exist in any other online game ive played.

What's so special? Options. Change. You can change yer class thru hunting or quests. You can be anything you want, yer not predestined, yer not stuck. That not stuckness, that lack of being stuck continues to breathe life into a game that is basically over for me. Tweak yer stats and go from passive to agressive. Sure there is often a limit i yer twists and turns you can do, but just by the very notion that you HAVE an option, a choice, you can choose, you can be x, y, or z and not just x. Is VERY rewarding really. An excellent piece of development. Already I know lineage2 wont give me that. I'll change on the way up the ladder but once i get there, that is who i am. I've yet again reinvented myself i ac2 and now feel completely new, challenged and fresh. Haha.. too funny. I often pick the most extreme unlikely chosen angle of play. Character stats what would suggesst the obvious "thats stupid, itd never work" those are the characters i want to play. Disco Dancer Garbage Man Who Wields Cats as his weapon of attack? Stupid! Nope thats me.. i want that role.

viral marketing

Maybe i'm the only marketing guy here... ( at work )... but I love this stuff. - Thanks to Clint for posting it in Normal.

What is Viral Marketing, case in point the Ford Sportka's campagin.

A controversial ad gets "leaked" on the Internet and outrage (and
publicity) ensues. On the heels of the controversy, the head company
announces it has nothing to do with the commercial. This puts the
company in good light and creates additional buzz. What started as an
Internet phenomenon is picked up by the mainstream print and TV press,
which then spreads word of the illicit video that causes a new rush back
to the Internet to find out what the fuss is all about.

"It's kind of a win-win-win situation," said Lucian James, a pop culture
expert and founder of the Agenda marketing agency in San Francisco. The
video is reaching the Sportka's target market even though Ford disavows
responsibility, he said . . . "It's all very kind of illicit. The ad is
not supposed to be released and not seen, however it is seen and it's
creating buzz."

-----

Yep it works very well actually. This simple ad was crafted to provoke a respose, its leaked to the net, it works its way like a worm thru the system, news media picks up on it, conversation and buzz ensues, it lauches the product to the forefront of the market. Now was the ad in bad taste? Depends.. do you like cats? I like cats... awww bad.. kitty die!

Bonus blog finds while searching for this ad online.

the circle

Ya ever got caught in the circle? The circle of I said yes but I wanna hear no? Its that circle of questioning that gets me at times.

"did you look over the materials that need to be looked over?"
"yes"
"damnit man we cant just focusing on looking over the materials that need looked over, we need more x"
clears throat.. "well ya we got x too"

See that circle? That circle that says come this way BUT!! AHHH HA! you've fallen into my trap, i really mean, THIS WAY!

I need to practice asking those questions. Then I'd be a fearless ruler of doom!

timeline

I miss not knowing what the timeline is in some repsects. When I worked in anime the timeline was everything. You had 4 weeks, thats it, to do a film. You make the box, you make the ad's, you craft the titles, you write the scripts, you get the actors, it's your show. Yet its not. Ok so it wasn't really our show. But for anyone to buy and think it was their show it had to be our show first.

Even ADV's timeline was weak at best but it was the order beacon in the sea of chaos. I like knowing that by the time xmas arrives you WILL have done x, y, z, and h.

Maybe part of the problem is research. Research is chaos, its the orderless process of finding truth. Since anything can happen you need to be ready for anything! Which is like saying "yep lets fly no wait take the bus, nah lets walk oh better yet we'll surf!" gah pick one!!

Ya know i keep feeling the nudge the prickly sensation that I MUST DO X, its calling me, I belted it out with a roar of laughter for a moment in time yet somehow that moment of time was its birth.. it calls me, craft me, MAKE ME! Like i laughed an idea sparked and now it sits on the self.. #4343040034.2b waiting to be made. Sometimes I laugh it off, haha.. other times i feel it calling me from the shelf... "hey man you thought of me, now im here, get over here and make me... I KNOW YOU can..". I see myself standing there in the door frame staring at hundreds of screaming ideas, all chatting to each other not me even.. they are self occupied with other ideas like a shelf of brains talking to each other chatting on todays gossip. One however makes eye contact with me, hes in the "newly conceived" waiting room for dan's ideas. And he looks pissed. Craft me damnit! MAKE ME!!

It was a particularly crafty idea. Its another dan classic fake but seems real idea. Presenting something to provoke a response, present suggestion, make them wonder yet in actual form, the idea is simple, not truthful what so ever. So much that i love it. So maybe I should do it.

Part of me thinks why do I love the false. Its like i dont think i'll ever been a season three casnio bingo champion, nope, highly doubtful, but a signed plaque on the wall, thats got character, go make that.

I seem to put alot of gusto behind the notion of sparking people, infusing the question in them when you didnt ask one litterily. What is the wonder of being human and interacting with a our enviroment and interpurting our senses and drives and desires and lusts that make us go yahoooooooo! Ever seen Dark City? I like the way the mad doctor had a formula for memories to create personalities. Could it be that simple?

What are people expecting? Ok if they are expecting X, give them Y and make them love it. Granted its totally hit or miss. And if you miss, die gracefully..... so much that they follow you home. Ha!

buzz

There are times where being creative and having an ragingly wild personality at a meeting where most folks are alseep is a very bad thing. Typically its always bad for me. Its like since you have ideas then that makes you the team quarterback. I always end up with more to do... and or I end up steppin on folks who had control but since they couldn't speak their minds about it, they dont lose it, i just override it.

There are times i simply can't turn it off, the right mixture of conversation arrives and here's what i got to say about it. It always gets me in trouble though. I need like an assistant to go run off and do my things or something. Cause its always "dan, thats great.. go do that".

It really comes from having no plan or set structure marketing wise. Ya gotta have the wall of knowledge, the chart that says we are toast, and in the next 12 months we are going to launch a campaign to educate folks about toast and here's how its gonna go down. Plan, write it down, and be open for events that are new or could turn to your favor but the plan is important. I dunno if where i'm at now has the plan, sok i'm not at the helm, sadly though anything i ever mention that is just a inkling of planage or planning like ability and suddenly im that planner. Yet i also dont have total control. Maybe i expect too much but at the same time is like all I did was come in and say "ya i like toast" and now im the Champion of Toast!

Alot of it comes down to making a buzz. How do people interpert a buzz. I think a buzz can be crafted and consumed in a strageticly placed way but the buzz itself has to be open to random excitement. It has to be a buzz thats flexible and you are the buzz maker have to be willing to accept whatever the result is of the buzz. You cant start a buzz and then get finieky over how it progresses. Its like controlling a worm on the net, let it go, infect the masses, live on! The buzz works the same way. You start it, people finish it.

So whats the buzz? Whats the anatonmy of a buzz? First and foremost a buzz appears accidental and or coy or fake or contains mystery. How do you package mystery? Beta works, slap beta on that. History works too, bring up the past as yer sled on the snow of today. Announce notable flaws despite the pursuit to continue onward. The Titanic effect. Take a stand. Support the interest of an endangered species thats not really endangered.. make people go to google to find answers to a question you asked. Insert self doubt, wonder, provoke the color, present the con as a state of being, slap it on the side of the truck - Bad Jerry's Pizza! Buzz is attitude among the sheep of society. Its about being different and saying it out loud.

What is not the buzz? Its not a sales tool. You don't expect sales from buzz, you expect conversations and conversations lead to sales. Buzz is not an advertisement, it is not a statement of facts, its highly non factual. Buzz is not a menu, buzz is not a recipe, its not a dish best served cold. Buzz is artistic yet doesnt claim to be. Whatever the buzz isnt, it probably is. Its the question.

Buzz is inately eccentric, you go left i go right, you say yes i say no but then probably yes cause i like the way the sun fills that space over there. Buzz is entirely human. Buzz is random yet precieved with function.

Sometimes buzz takes little work. Sometimes buzz is purely accidental. Most of the time buzz is crafted, engineered, perhaps even at a primal inspirational level, it is however concieved and executed.

How is buzz supported? Buzz rides on the energy of those present. Buzz needs a presence, it needs a word or url, or picture, yet buzz can also just be a vibe or a buzz even.

The first question is not how do we create buzz, it is are we buzz worthy? Can we let go enough to let buzz spawn? Alot of the letting go works easier if the plan is in place. We need a road map. Relax, do good, and be heard and the buzz will come to you.

They say not everything is buzzable but I say nay, nay i say, it all is buzzable it just rides on the base of who and what would want it. I believe there are at least 2 of everyone on the planet. My clone is out there, ive seen him. He looks just like me, he could be like me, no one is ever totally alone, thus a buzz favorable to you, has a strong chance being favorable to others.

Buzz cannot be crafted and willed into being thru the process known as the meeting. That is not buzzable.

Buzz is playful, you remember how to play?

madness

WARNING! RANDOM LINKAGE AHEAD!

Busy busy busy... the weather is gettin nice and the days are gettin a wee bit crazier. Sooo many ideas. First of all, gah relationship talks, whos doin who and why and where and when and on what kitchen table.. lots of talk it seems. Its all good of course but it does make me wonder at times.. the whole LOVE thing is crazy! Makes people insane, but I think people in general, genders at least we're all a bit crazy. And no Dave i'm not talkin about you... :P

Side subject B... house, condo.. something. I think i've come to the conculsion that this is my last year of rent. Least I need to start thinkin about investments and what not. So the hunt begins for something "me". Now lets factor in a few things, i hardly take any space as it is.. ask the room mate, he'd agree. So i'm thinkin condo... but then I think house yet im not ready for a house. We'll see haha. It'll be a year before i know anything. I think I blame most of this on Monster House, I love that show. I love the crazy interiors they build. Like fuel for the mind I sit back and go "oh that zen house one.. that was cool.. i want a pond, a weeping wall.. ya. the buddha in the corner, thats cool" haha. I cant seem to get enough of HGTV, I keep watching Design on a Dime, Monster House etc.. you name it. Gonna gut a house, create something fresh.. I wanna see it. Haha. Ahhh well.

Course that gets me thinkin about the apartment, I really want to have some projector parties. Maybe build a tiki lounge area outside in our yard. Put up a mini fence.. ya know something that can go up in seconds, get some speakers wired out there, ya know rocks or tiki head like speakers hah. Yes that'd rock. Get some real furniture, something comfy etc, yet able to fold away easy since odds are it could all just leave in the morning or in the wee hours of the nite. I think speakers out there and better lighting and we'd use it much more than we typically do. Once all is well, break out the projector, and sit back and in our make shift drive in. LOL that'd be hilarious. Lets do it! Tiki in.. dutch? Who cares i like the site design! Gimme more Tiki! Well I need to do more research for sure here... much to do. But I think good sound and a little area back there would be nice..

Good weather brings to mind good things like patio bars.. where are the good patios for happy hour? Ok so my drinking isnt what it used to be, still a good outdoor setting i cant resist. A cool breeze with a marg in had.. how can life beat that? Tonight I enjoyed a nice relaxing cookout at my brothers place. It had all the elements, cool weather, nice peaceful surroundings, nice patio, good food, great conversation.. all the while the mini sparkled under the nite sky.. shes clean today ya know.. waxed all.. which mean its should rain tomorrow. HA! But seriously where are the patio places? I need to get to doin that. Dang I need to get to doin alot of things lately. The weather, more like the sun drags that outa me. Especially now before the heat arrives. Now if only we had a Sip n Dip! Man that place rocked! Montana that is a gorgeous place... granted it wasnt outdoor and what not but come on behind the bar is the poool! Thats the way to go. And remember dont go anywhere without yer marg and yer ultra-lounge music. Now that site rocks.. check out the moving background.. woooha! I love that. I think the babe at the bar is Kallese, could be... is she mean enough.. TOUGH enough? Ok and since were on the topic of tiki loung and all things pinable and what not I cant stress this enough.. not only is Landa Landis a perfect.. tiki gal but her website.. holy cow folks, wait a a sec.. beer.. ok her website ROCKS, that is pure genius, screw that, pure tiki lounge lovin action. Tiki, need more.. love it!

Ya know its just never old to me, isnt that odd? So fresh! Its like freshness 24/7! Speakin of fresh.. ok I saw Kill Bill 2, ok and the whole superman analogy is well put.. almost too well put. Good flick but I miss the furious action the first one had.. and well GOGO. Haha...

Getaload of those retro mags.. lol, thats classic. And remember folks, love the master!

Enjoy the weekend! May the tiki gods hold you in good favor.. and remember if ya like a song, its ok to just play it over and over and over and over again... thanks DEEP G!

rita talk

Hmmmm I miss working on this project... Rita Talk.

spurl

So i've installed the new spurl, go checkit folks, good things come in small packages. And while yer at it, look at drock! Ooooo. Sadly i've been kinda off the social network grid. Trying to cram the last bits of this project thru the machine.

While on spurl this morning I looked over the "what's hot" in spurlness.. Hmmm The Porn Myth! There's an interesting topic. Good article too. I think theres plenty of mystery left really. Depends on the folks involved.

Haha... I love the onion! I especially like the old news section, the spoofed history stuff. DID JAZZ SINK the TITANIC?!?! Hahaha.. classic stuff.

Its gonnna be sunny and warm this weekend! Time to get motorin! Need to break out the camera rigs and get recordin on some good mini video action.

Last night i jumped into a bit of lineage2 even though its a complete treadmill i still found myself playing it trying to get to 9, yes 9th lvl, HEAR ME ROAR! Hahaha... then i saw how dark elves walk.. er ran even. They move just like prancing leaping evil critters... haha. It was funny. I mean i didn't expect the animation of movement to be really different than other races. Sure enough though, elves truly prance thru the world, bent over and forever leaning over... i'll have to post a pic tonight.

its...

its mystery cd day... the day where i dig out all the unmarked cdrs and play them.. its a big mystery tour of music. So far three "fast" ones.. i mark them with the F of fastiesouso el musico... i'm sure the rest are gonna be lounge but ya never know.

The sun has finally arrived.. i guess in theory i could run outside and quik detail the mini and all.. i mean its washed.

Man i stayed up waaaaaaaaaaaay to late last nite. Damn that teamspeak! I've been chattin up a storm lately with the ac2/lineage2 crowd, folks in my guild and what not.

Must endure the torture of work... must stay wake.

April 13, 2004

lineage 2

Ok so i got back on the treadmill last nite.. I keep finding it difficult to get into this game. It should be just another typical RPG right? Ok so lets break it down thus far...

The Good
graphics, well done generally so, all looks nice
characters, they are clear, well detailed, overly fan-serviced orientated models
effects, battle effects, spells combat motions, all looks good
chat, better than expect chat interface, overall yes, ok nice..
music, while minimal at times is well placed, orcs have dark moody themes, humans have middle range themes
PVP, while im not really into PVP per say, i dont mind it
the people playin it, most have been good, even the pk'ers
radar, without this id be lost all the time
mobs, good graphics, nice detailed models etc
servers, many servers to choose from
races, at least they all look different, and have different core abilities

The Bad
sound, i seem to experience sound cutting out on me often
brightness, everything seems dark at times, orcs seem to be in a perpetual darkness world, what are the dark elves are living in
banking, costs money to save money
exploits, while i like a good exploit sure but folks runnin around with 10million messes up the scale of balance
      the map, seems fairly useless
lag, when ive experienced it, sucks - its not a lag that you can endure its a lag that arrives and sends you to the desktop
finding npcs, npcs and players share the same "naming covention", so players could be npcs, this needs fixed
conning, i cant ever quite tell for sure how to select someone or con something easily

The Indifferent
quests, cant tell, sorta good but translation errors ask for x when they mean y
tutorial info, overall good but still leaves me wondering what im supposed to be doing, whats my motivation!
game play, at the moment its a treadmill of i need to kill x mobs to get x skill points to get x abilities
money, its there seems the game is very orientated to the need for $$ and the consumption of $$
grouping, no idea havent done it yet
story, is there one? i cant tell.

The Promise
casters, ive seen snippets of what magic users can do and i like what i see, question is will i get that far?
classes, ive got 2 at the moment, human caster, orc monk, both have defined abilities with a 3 tree lvl of advancement
pets, they look cool i cant wait to get some if i ever make it hahah
siege battles, from what ive read about them they look fun, but thats a LONG ways off

Its definately missing the proper hook to keep players interested i think. Aside from leveling and gaining skills to see them go boom and what not.. i have no idea nor interest in any story. Maybe im just playing for the fan-service.

lost on the small screen

Last night I had dinner with my folks and Father Dave. Like all dinner events, ya start out with the basics of chit chat and work yer way up into conversations of epic porportions. Right away my folks were stirin up the basics of Rockwell home chatter.. this butter is low fat, no calorie, hardly any SUFFERING! haha.. I love that. This is better butter for you, you won't cry, i promise. Gotta love Mom. So as the drinks flowed Father Dave and I stumbled in the conversation of the PASSION, what'd we think etc. He told me at home, among the other priests its a split, 2 like it, 2 don't.. he himself liked it. I asked him if he thought it was anti-semitic since thats all the rage these days. "well not any more than the new testement" heh. True. I thought so too.

Dinner progressed and Papa's signiture pork roast was wonderful. Dad can cook a pork roast soooooo well. I even got a few garlic cloves.. yes! The conversation shifted as the dinner went on, vatican this, pope that. Dave and I had a good conversation on the Pope actually. I got a lot of questions answered and generally, that whole papal system is kinda whacked haha. I could sense he thought it did too but its like much of the old church, its just old old old way old.

Then it came. Movie time. As Mama serves up coffee and ice cream Papa instructs me, #5 son to present tonights movie. They always call me for movies. "What have you gotten lately, anything good?" I used to buy dvds all the time, lately I havent bought too many. I did however get Lost In Translation and my mother had been asking about it. I brought it over cause Matrix Revolutions, well Matrix in general just flew over my folks, its one of those movies my mother nods off to, actually she fakes like the dishwasher is stuff and leaps up to go fix it and never returns, then its me and my father and his questions heh.
I was a bit worried about Lost in Translation though.

Why? Something was lost in the transfer of Lost in Translation to dvd. Its a movie you really need to experience in a theater and I cant explain why. I remember seeing it in the theater and recalling how awesome it was, it just had life, it had substance, it didnt follow the typical hollywood route, it made me think, made me love, made me wonder etc. It was a great flick. When i bought it on dvd and watched it again i was in agony..... i fell asleep. Ha. So my folks? They gave it about 15mins which most of that time was moving about doing stuff only occassionally seeing what was happening. Then they sat down and i could see it in my fathers eyes..... he was looking for the action. My mother had the glazed look of, something important is happening here im sure of it, but lets all have conversation instead. Its simple really. My father can watch baskeball, golf and bond. Thats it. My mom can watch gene kelly dance the nite away, any musical ever made and thats it. Thats the scope of attention grabbing substance. With some room im sure but roughly thats it. Father Dave is trendy, hes a now priest! But he too is pretty easily distracted. Lost in Translation went down in flames after only 30mins.

I can take that, what i have a hard time taking is the assumptions of the audience. Like youve seen a great love story and the guy next to ya has seen 12mins of it, doesnt know how it ends but starts tellin everyone their assumptions of where its going when its not going there. I had to get outa there really. I needed to get some sleep and this is where sons and daughters typically exit anyways. And i could take all the ones i was hearing "ok so he sleeps with her, he has the affair? typical.." "no no thats not what happens, you have to watch.." "the bar scene is getting old..." "so they just talk thats it?" its really just a volley of questions throw not at you but into the air. I'm always dumb enough to try and answer them cause i want folks to just watch!! WATCH IT!! ha...

So it was a good dinner and a good visit, what i learned again is that the movie selection never works haha. Next time bring a remastered version of West Side Story or the latest Bond heh.

lineage 2

Ok so remember me sayin how i was attempting this beta. I am kinda. Least attempting. Theres not alot of hooks in the game though, i mean ways to keep me crackin on it. I keep going back to Spell Force and playing these massives 3hr maps and i'm like dang im just barely thru the humans and i got five more races to explore. So much more color content maybe.. ya maybe thats it. I was playin a orc the other nite in Lineage 2 and it was so frickin dark. Hmmm maybe give another go tonight.

cookies!

Saturday night while talking to my bro about GPS systems I watched my PC spring to life and start installing a horde of random crap. I was alive and full of something.. i had no clue what was happening. I immediately went to work counter attacking everything that was happening, deleting files etc, running spy bot, virus checkers you name it. What was it? Honestly I don't still other than sometime later in that evening i picked up a nasty file somewhere. I keep thinking it was cause of some site i visited in Korea that had odd DHTML pages to show various Lineage 2 screenshots etc.

Anyways Spybot blew away a bunch of nasties, virus checker came up clean yet I kept seeing more oddness. Thats when I took an axe to cookies. All 5000+ of them BOOM gone. BYE! I want to surf annonymously more and more these days. I spend alot of time on japanese websites cultivating art and news etc. I kept the basic cookies like amazon and what not but no more sitetracking i say, no more ad trackers, coookies bad! No more! Problem resolved? Yes for the most part. Still a few odd files I need to kill and i'll get around to that this week but i think the worst is over.

Probably need to upgrade really. I need a 3.4gig with a gig a ram these days.. ya know to surf the web and stuff.

Sometimes i wonder these worms and viruses, is Symantec secretly just paying the critters out there to make them? I mean we have dozens and dozens of viruses these days. I could see the board room of execs sitting there with this big time line to 2006, ok here we are and this month we release W32.FKFOFLLCE.a and then next up is W32.KOFLOO.b etc.. seems like they have a release schedule out there somewhere.

One of the gals here at work just opened a bad email on her machine.. and booom.. mass infection! Yeahness. Luckily she was off the network.

weekend bliss

Well the weekend was excellent. I still can't believe it though.. Easter come and gone already. My folks wanted to do the Easter Vigil mass on saturday nite, essentially a really dramatic long mass heh.. midnight masses always bring back memories of stuffy rooms, little air to breathe and sleepy heads.. so I passed on that and it seemed to be just enough firepower for my mom to agree. Hehehe. So Sunday mass it was, got there early even and it was still packed to the gills. I like the St. Thomas Newman center church though on the OSU campus. Ya get alot young folks, accedmics, lotta professors, my folks always help out etc. Its a nice community. A furious community actually, always busy with something, student group, emerging ideas group, young more 'radical' like priests seem to appear and give talks, we even have women doing the surmons which would be a BIG no at other churches ive gone to, so its kinda nice to see a more aware with whats happening out there kinda of leadership at the Newman Center.

Currently run by Paulist priests.. which reminds me theres a special coming on tv (hopefully not passed that covers St. Paul that I need to tivo). One the pastor leaders there Father Dave is a great old guy. Since i'm kinda off and on with the church thing some days he always greets me with a high dose of sarcasm which i love. Yesterday he greeted my folks and then shook my hand saying "we always welcome new people.." and i retorted with "well it hear catholism is all the rage these days..." and he replies "2000 years running ya know" and i say "oh i see i see...". Father Dave and I rarely talk faith really I dunno really, maybe cause to me faith is personal. He always gives me a glowing warm reception and he knows my character so well, and he of course loves to laugh so thats good. I'm joining him and my folks tonight for dinner which is always a treat really cause i get to hear stories of the paulists and their inner workings and vatican this and bishop that etc. I keep Father Dave in my prayers often. He's got a bad hip and they are sending him to Austin I think this coming August. He's very old and when I see him i can feel the history and the lives hes touched along the way. He's a great priest. Any priest that can tango with me and my sarcasm and wit I find unquie and highly enjoyable. Heck I sometimes go to mass for him more so than anything else.

Course I like mass for other things as well. I really love to sing at mass. I never used to do it, even while growing up I hardly sang a world, maybe i was intimitated by my fathers boooming low voice or the way he'd always look at us kids when the allileula's hit heh. But for the past few years i've been back in Ohio i've enjoyed singing at mass alot. Heck I'd consider joining the choir if we had one.. we dont have one luckily, and i probably need some lessons to get my voice in shape etc. too.

Other reasons to be there are purely personal and cant really be expressed here. Least I see no point in doing so. But overall it was a great Easter. It was good to see all the family come together, eat the feast, talk and have a good time. Kids are crazy and they freak me out at times. I'd need to be much more relaxed with kids i think. I dont see how you can be really. At the dinner table Mama talked about how her mother used to tell to practice selective hearing heh... kids they are crazy 2 year old walking destroyers. Haha. Great kids though. I keep thinking, ya raise them in a white padded room, thats the way to go. After Easter dinner I went home and closed my eyes sitting on the bed... and woke up 12hrs later. Wooohaaa that was a good sleep. Good sleep is always nice.

Well another week of retail design madness occurs. Stay frisky out there folks!

lets see...new.. whats new

What's happening?!? Hmmmm good question. Ok lets see saturday was a beautiful day and I took 'mimi' out for a good wash, wax, vacum, detail etc... she looks sooo pretty now! Everytime I polish my Mini Cooper to black reflection waxed perfection it tends to have two effects on drivers. I either get the stare or wave, that i consider the good effect or i get the "im on yer ass dude you wanna race lets go, pink slips and all" or what i call the fast and furious effect. Why can't I just have a clean car and be happy with that. What I love the best is the guy that has the cheap civic whos got the loud rumba exhaust on it, who races up to you gets 2 inches from yer bummper (this time i didnt really notice him cause i was lookin at this cute dog this other gal had on her lap driving) anyways ya so he's got the kick ass im a bad muther civic speedin along right next to me, you wanna race me right thing going. Whew thats a long sentance. Ok so he hits the gas and screams off letting everyone know he's moved forward!!! The best part of this is traffic lights. He flies down bethel with a roar of UMMPH! only to hit a light, a nice long one. Long enough for me to arrive as if i havent burned a gallon of fuel or knew he was there. Hilarious. Drives them crazy when ya look at them with the "oh hiya" face.

Course spring is coming and I have a few additions for my own car. I plan to get extra running lights, the rally-ish ones and I'm thinking white stripes and a few different vynil stencil designs, either rally ones like the number 34 on the side of the car or obey giant ones that will say "OBEY!" or use a symbol etc.

So other than a great day driving and just loving the mini yesterday lets see.. what else occured. Taxes! HA! Don't ya hate when ya forget to sign them? Hahaha.. I must of been thinking elsewhere that day.

On the pc front lately i've been running into that "need need need" thing where i consume like six things at once. For awhile it was link sites and graphics and interactive links, looking for newness in all that is new. Then it was 3d engine or virtual world builders. I really need to find some nice 2d to 3d extruding tools for some ideas on some work related gigs. But by far the most curious thing lately has been gaming. AC2 is waning hard. I jumped into game the other day and found everyone in my clan playin away... some on teamspeak. Hey I got teamspeak. So I jumped on their teamspeak server and chatted it up. Being able to hear someone changes thing. Talking to enties you only knew as X or Y now become more real. People I hardly knew in game, they were just folks i chatted with but never really met or talked to or emailed or knew in another medium gave me little to go on as to figuring them out. And game chat is different than say instant messaging or the world of flickr where ya get more clues about someone.

Still the power of voice and that instant feedback of what you said and how they responded is really nice. I have a feel for these people now. Their personalities leap thru the computer monitor. Some of them are in ohio even and we're talkin about gettin together for a lan party or something. I'm game, i mean mimi could use the drive right? heh.

Its funny using teamspeak I find it hard to type in chat and talk at the same time. Not everyone was using at the time so i had to type to others and then speak to those that could hear etc. It was a little off, I just wanted to talk and not have my fingers translate what i was sayin.

Also on the gaming front lately is this hunger for new. I've been searching for something new and fun to play. With AC2 dying and while I was never really addictied to it, and the free time i've had lately just doing other things has been good, I've really been egar to see and experience a new world online.

So like everything.. excess!

Ut2k4, fun but only in a group setting.. not really hittin the mark for me lately. I miss good fun co-op fps play. I miss doom haha. Maybe cause I'm reading Masters of Doom. B1942 Vietnam newer but not enough to keep me egaged. I go back and forth on it lately. I love the 60's soundtrack in game and the overall presentation and excution of the game is excellent. I'm just not there yet to give it notice. EQ? Ha, i checked back in on my old old account and sure enough its still there and i got 10 free days naggin me, now if I could accept the old graphics and manner of play. Not working. AC2 truly corrupted me. Course AC2 lately has been sorta dead to me. I don't see a real reason to level any more, I'm high enough yet my class is boring most of the time. Its a beautiful engine, its the kinda platform id love to learn how to mobs for or design landscapes, create etc for. But the spark of play is long gone. This is where games like AC2 and EQ trap ya. You mainly get in game as a means to hook up with folks ya know. Killing that connection is difficult unless ya sense that folks are movin on to something new. That newness is Lineage 2. Which was never really on my radar as something to consider. But after setting up an account and checking it out these past few days I could see it as potential entry in the "have played" log. A couple things leap out at ya in Lineage 2. Its another RPG ok thats cool, i'm lookin for the world thing. Its all PVP, ok Bob will hate it but Clint will love it. And its got the most T&A yet i'm not trying to be T&A in any game i've play for a long time... so Todd will love it! Hahaha.

Lineage 2 is strange. My understanding of Lineage 1 was that it was a big korean game, a way of life even, folks really took to the first one like the way EQ hit the states and consumed the masses in the late 90's. L2 3d engine looks nice though i havent seen much. Character creation gives you that first hint of potential T&A in this game which is funny. This game was crafted for the would be wanna be gotta get wanna have anime fan. This game has built in fan service in such odd little i'm not trying ways its funny. Simply put the avatars for your various players look great. If you want the ultimate in sleek and sexy, people tend to pick the dark elf race since they believe in hardly any clothing and all the female characters look like an off shoot of Lady Death or Dawn. Gasp, I hear the dark elves are over run with players hahaha. Yeah I could see that. Course elves in general look just as good. Baddies so far, the coolest one ive seen just on the edge of town look good too. I picked a mage and started out. Everyone running around killin low level critters doing low level quests.. dang i've done this before why do I keep doing it. Its that little bit of curiousity that keeps ya goin. The interface is pretty slick, no real issues yet. I dont know if the avatar will move based off keyboard yet, so far looks mainly mouse movement ie DS style etc. Graphics look pretty decent, its an upgrade of sorts over other games ive played but of course i need to see more to really tell ya. Character animations for combat are pretty good, they of course have the related anime physics and rules of anime seem to apply to L2. Men who wield magic have animations of a manly priest/warlock like nature, lotta arms flingin oo castin etc. Gals who cast magic do so in a cute bend my body like a "v" and make me look sexy and be sure I bounce around while doing this nature. Haha. This game is for anime freaks for sure. It will go far. Graphics go pretty high res i hear, maybe Clint will try it for that haha. The characters are gorgeous of course and the landscape etc about what ya'd expect. The PVP game style is interesting. With everyone startin around ya so low level and all its hard to get a real feel for it, other than you just kill some guy. Or more so, some guy just killed me. Bad Karma dude! That will affect yer karma levels man, watch out! I havent reached the realm of lost items, characters over a 5th lvl when they die or get pk'd you lose stuff yay! I'll see how that goes next.

So Lineage 2 is so so. Its better when i'm game with folks I know. Some of the old AC2 crowd has moved that way and with teamspeak and all it makes the game play pretty good really. But the game itself is just a side distraction from Spell Force the current force of gaming in me lately. Its an RTS meets RPG and done pretty darn well. Its alot like Dungeon Siege but the RTS angle of it is really fun. There are many times where the map is swarming with critters the music is EXCELLENT and the true greatness of this game leaps out at ya. Still it has its issues like "holy crap theres 75 units on the screen and you want me to EVEN think about how my character is casting magic or what should it do when i level up etc?!?" I love a game with attention to detail and the gang that made Spell Force did that. Much attention went into this 2 cd game that has blown the doors off most RTS's ive played to date. So much to do. And being able to see it from and overhead view or go FPS right down into the action is pretty cool. Again the music ROCKS. Excellent music. I can't stress that enough. Its on par with DS's original music which i thought was excellent as well. The game isnt too easy either, ive been playin for awhile now and I've barely scratched the surface in overall content for the single player mode. Very cool.

So ya there ya have it, Lineage 2 is interesting and i'll try that for a bit while its in open free beta mode... and while that goes on my main squeeze of gaming attention goes into SpellForce which can be consuming at times. Haha... Oh ya and I see Sacred just game out too. Much to do much to do! I need to go into game design next maybe.

stop it sally

Bookstores, I hate them!! Not really... but dang it, they suck me in and $$$ later I walk out with books, MAGs (bad), and music (GOOD). Mags are bad cause im a sucker for new mags, fringe mags, gadget mags, lurid (gasp) mags, car mags, design mags, graphics mags, music mags.. its endless. Let's start with music first. New music is always good. So here's what I got.

I've been on the hunt for some trip-hop with a good vocals.. mainly cause I need something to balance out my cd comps, and typically they are mostly instrumental, ie no real vocal other than the occasional sample etc. So I need more good trip-hop with of course, good vocals. I sampled this a bit.. seems to be good, let's give it a try.

Next up is Underworld 92-02. I wasn't always a fan of Underworld but their last album was awesome so I decided to give this a try. Listening to it in the car today, clearly this was an excellent choice.

Whenever I'm cd shopping there's always that mystery cd buy. It could be good, it could be bad, it could be horrible and haunt you sayin "you paid $15 for me... YOU PAID MONEY FOR ME..... "..... so there's always a bit of hesitation but... I cave and get it. The cover was cool and it was funk-latin-groove like. And lately i've been gettin into sound with Kinky and Los Invisibles etc. I don't recognize anything on this cd other than it was in the dance section of the store. I'm game, let's go. After a good listen in the car, its good. Its a fusion of jazzy deep beats and radio samples and overall a good coffee house kinda mix to it. No vocals, basically a good funk fusion type set, not too down low though, more groove less depression.

Then on to the MAGs, I picked up Mixmag UK, which I need to stop doing cause its always like 90% UK club listings and rest music info I'm interested in. But it had.. yes the evil lure of a drum and bass cd on it.. another cd. Hmmmmm sure ok. MAG has so so info, charts are always interesting to me, articles on drugs which the brits cant seem to get enough of is standard fare, reviews on whats new? Not bad.. interviews with dj's I know, bonus. CD sounds like? Well.. it has two really good tracks. So overall? Bust.

Next up we got Living Etc, the UK version of that as well, also comes with a Buddha Bar cd, no listen yet so cant say there, why the UK living mag? Looking for ideas. Just cause.

Then we got Asian Cult Cinema, the mini mag. Why? I never buy it but it had an interview with the gal that was GOGO in Kill Bill and that one fearless chick in Battle Royale, that caught my interest and maybe along the way I cound discover some new movies to rent.

Creative Arts Mag, no reason other than its creative art, and has a cd of software etc. More idea generation.

3D World 50th Issue! Well because of Clint I'm getting Painter and Poser 3D.. and this mag had some cool articles on Poser, so ok.

Mass Appeal, I saw this somewhere online, its a trendy im not cool but i could be cool mag. Ok give it a shot.

So that was my day.. spending and lunch at Amici on Sawmil. And I have to say, the North Market pasta folks that run that place, it looks great, but tooooo expensive. The salad though... AMAZING! That's the only thing I'd eat there.. the dressing they make is to die for.

pulp

A soft moist shapeless mass of matter.
The soft moist part of fruit.
A mass of pressed vegetable matter: apple pulp.
The soft pith forming the contents of the stem of a plant.
A mixture of cellulose material, such as wood, paper, and rags, ground up and moistened to make paper.
The soft tissue forming the inner structure of a tooth and containing nerves and blood vessels.
A mixture of crushed ore and water.
A publication, such as a magazine or book, containing lurid subject matter.

oh btw, beware of random linking...

I can't seem to get enough of pulp. Course I never really considered what it was other than vintage or you don't belong here. Actually most of it takes me back to the memory of walking into the Monkey's Retreat on the OSU campus area and just seeing all these off the wall magazines. Tons of them, racks and racks of vintage pulp. I love covers, the corny titles and hilarious one liners... "she was made for love.. he was made for crime.." Cheesecake comes to mind. Like anything for me really, once i get a taste and I like it I try to get as much of it as possible. And then things start happening, I start seeing it everywhere or I start seeing it in other peoples lives, and i find common threads from others on the subject, material etc. I randomily suck down some music online, its lounge but could be anything, just turns out to be PERFECT pulp material. Haha.. It's been a good morning.

Part of me thinks what's the attraction here, saucy vintage pinups? some, i like the aged feel of it, a hopeless romantic in me maybe for the vintage production of a pulp mag? That's kinda it really. Someone sat around and thought of making this mag/book etc.. and made it. At the time, it fit, today, it just makes me laugh and it resonates in me as a place to go to or look at to get a fresh view. So much of pulp/lurid theme these days is like a shotgun wedding, there is more innuendo, its in yer face, there is no more suggestion or provocation, its right here right now, there is no more question, the answers are given to you. I like how these mag and really all it is just cover art, but like any cover, you only get one chance to get that customer and that rule still stands today as far as a product on the shelf. If someone doesnt know it, yer cover image and your title text etc is your first attack in getting to come closer and consider. So i like these covers for that draw they have. It was a time were you werent supposed to be revealing or staright to the point, yet they tried to push it a bit as far as they could go and still reach the customer.

Part of the draw is that these are mags and books that were on the coffee tables of the rat pack. The only real icon or group of people that comes off the top of my head when looking at these covers. I think who was the customer, who bought these things. I see Sammy Davis Junior and the rat pack members or folks of that kind of nature. Lurid isn't bad by any means in my book, its just fringe to me.

What is lurid? the thesaurus tells me: "ashen, bloody, blue, deep, dirty, disgusting, distinct, exaggerated, extreme, fiery, ghastly, gory, graphic, grim, grisly, gross, gruesome, hideous, horrible, horrid, horrifying, livid, low-down, macabre, melodramatic, obscene, off-color, offensive, purple, racy, raunchy, revolting, rough, salty, sanguine, savage, sensational, sinister, startling, terrible, terrifying, violent, vivid, yellow"

Now I think its interesting that blue, purple and yellow are lurid. Thinking about a scene that would unfold before you. Could I really take a step back and say to someone "that was sooo yellow...". or "get this purple crap off the stage!" haha. There's alot of negative words there I just never attached to pulp. Course again I never called it pulp, I always called it retro or vintage. My good friend Jeff has what I'd consider probably the largest collection of tiki/vintage album covers I've ever seen in one collection. The basement of his house is a Tiki Bar / Shine to the sounds and vintage looks and feels of Tiki. Alot of pulp gets tossed into that bin as well I think. Tiki is like the hawaiin groove version of pulp.

So what's the fuss over pulp today eh dan? No reason really, just something i've been seeing in the http:// gateway lately. Part of it brings back a memory I had last fall while working on a project in Montana. First of all Montana is gorgeous. I always thought, Vegas, I belong in Vegas. Heh.. thats for another time, but ya I didn't really have any one particular part of the nation that really attracted me, ok.. that's not true Portland was awesome. But anyways when I was in Montana it was quiet, totally unlike me yet felt really good. BIG SKY is right, massive sky, its hard to explain, but vast areas of nothing, it was so nice to see..no mall, no cars, no buildings etc.. it wasnt like that in all areas.. just most hahah. Anyways the work we had to occured in this really REALLY REALLY small town, population 600. Yer basic cattle ranch folk, which is who we were talkin to ranchers about ranchin and what not. So while we're there, we stayed at this bed and breakfast that was like a scene in the movies.. ya take the main road this way and turn off to yer left into the field / dirt road and go thataway for a long time. Its just you, your car and dust, gravel and old brokendown fencing around you. Looking over to the left while yer in this seemingly endless straightaway you see nothing be fields, cattle land, and oh ya that big ass mountain over there. Eventually you pull up to this old house, and your host is a 98 year old lady with a dog the size of a yugo. She's the got the old barn out back, all kinds of gizmos that spin in the wind, lotta wind... maybe thats why i liked it so much. Tons of wind, a good strong wind to remind you yer not alone. As the sun began to set and I sat on the porch and witnessed probably the greast singlemost amazing sunset i've ever seen. Clouds gleaming, sky darkening, purple, yellow, blue.. (oh so lurid.. haha!) It was just awesome. After getting settled I ventured downstairs to see how our host was doing. She was shuffling her feet around the kitchen, everything in her house was classic vintage, stove, furnace, chairs, fridge.. it was great I loved it. As the evening winded down I scoped out the living room and found a ton of pulp mags, not the adult kind, and the adult kind dont really appeal to me, I was looking thier day version of todays maxium or details mag. Sure enough she had a bunch. It was great I wish I had a scanner. She didnt really take care of them, they were just mags she had, old mags... really really really old mags. She didn't recall anything really special out of them, some of them she said could bring back a memory of how it used to be, and she liked that.

I don't have that memory but maybe I can imagine a bit.

the rant

So i've been chatting it up with folks lately over the MIT Serendipity thing, if yer wondering what the heck that is, it's a few days back go read it. Basically it sorta ties into this new "proximity dating" thing. Where by your phone will be aware of other phones/users near you and match up personal profile information. Ok simple concept and so far I've had four discussions on it.. good ones. The other night, the day of discovery I recorded a nice rant in the car on the way home using the musty4000! Listen if you like: dan's proxy rant

Actually its not a rant so much as a ramble. That's better cause I ramble on about flickr, social network apps in general, IM, proximity dating, aware technology, the research stuff, i sing, a car almost hits me.. etc..

running late today

GAH! running late today but hey check this out - MID-TOKYO MAPS
