new google

Have you noticed? Google has a new interface. Yep new, yes new.. go look again So what? Well keep looking I don't like it. I feel like somethings wrong when I use it. Its not a huge change but enough to cause my experience to go from "i'm searching" to 'umm somethings wrong". Not good. Something like google is more than a visit to Amazon, its a staple in my existance, its my search. Gradual changes are far better than one big boom of a change.

So much new stuff out there, tons of it, each day just overflowing the scene. What scene? Now, this scene, course the blog world is far more interesting than life at times, ya ever notice that? You jump from blog to blog and its like leaping from tree to tree, tokyo to paris to chicago to new york. I suppose its all good, technology opening us up, but did we want to? How often do humans stumble in the dark just to stumble really, did we really want to turn the light on?

Maybe the net, the innovation it brings opens up too many doors. Maybe we were just curious but not THAT curious. Something like MIT's Serendipity, makes me wonder about that. What happened to just communication, simple human to human interaction. Will we become powerless to talk when our instant chat rooms leave us suddenly? If someone turns out the light can we still get out of the box or do we need to wait for the wifi to come back on. Ok maybe thats not all connected, Kallese is my editor, she'll fix that up.

But the point is the same, why do we need this? Ok and here's where im totally two faced, I love inventing and reading about things like this yet at the same time I ask myself why? Heh. The tech behind it isnt really revolutionary either.. bluetooth enabled phones talking to each other in their coded languages while thier masters unsuspectingly sip lattes. So while im enjoying my white mocca my phone is planning for me, its about to call or tell me, six feet over and to the left my potential soul mate is standing there. What happened to my own built in karma? Digital Karma now? Maybe my phone will suggest opening one liners to try or tell me statistically that the last five one liners i tried didnt work. Maybe the phone is also connecting and scheming with the smart architecture of the building and will tell the lights to dim down a bit when i approch, or maybe, shut off all the lights and put the spotlight on me. Maybe my ringtones will burst into a melody fashion so that it will trigger my feet to dance, in my smart shoes even. When do I really need to be human anyways, my gear is me, come date my technology.

Sad, I'm totally into figuring out this tech, yet at the same time, i'd never really want it for real.. sure to test and play maybe. But it seems like such a cruch, do i need this fix. I don't know. I enjoy this conversation though, I'll explore the path cause the destiny of this to be is happening now, I can't stop it, i'm just as curious really, the future is now, join it and or ignore it.. but doesn't change the fact it will be there.

Ya know the funny thing is this concept while new to us here in america perhaps is RAMPANT in japan. Thats hilarious. This goes back to my thinking on how completly whacked we are, all of us. Ahhh well. Its funny, they say "the industry WILL go in that direction eventually.." whats next then? If you can do proximity dating then what next? What's the big backlash to come... in 2030 when mobile soul mate technology gets outlawed for its abuses on the blogosphere or better yet in the flickrverse, what will society be then? We will revert to our primal voice box neverous self absorbed selves? LOL

Least the good part of this rant is found another good blog to read. This is good actually cause on Friday, I have to give a talk on Social Network Applications. Why? We are starting up a new weekly group here at work along with a few other firms in town to share ideas, techniques etc.. and this week its all me! I'm gonna give a talk on Flickr, Friendster, Tribe, Ryze and hopefully Netomat, though i havent used it in awhile. This could be a nice primer for me.

LOL course stepping into a few other blogs touching on MIT's work I stumble upon SenseCam which i've read about before and was actually on the drawing board here to explore methods in capturing the essence of persons day. Yes, it was even a Bob project! LOL, actually it was concieved long ago in the mind of various self aware post it notes and my obession for tiny cameras.. anyways. Its actually dual purpose, for me research, for others memory triggers via sound and image are critical I think. Now if it could capture smell and touch.. hey... whatya know. Thats coming next.

Oooo be sure to all those links, good stuff in there, the Body Area Awareness Network, ooo. More good reads into social network tools.
