campfire tea

Ok so today was Lextant Lunch day, we take one day in the month and do community grouping mass leaving the officey lunchie. Todays destination was Lemon Grass in the Short North. Wow.. really tasty. I had the ginger chicken and the campfire tea.... campfire tea? Yes.

I swear the thai sweet tea the served me tasted like several things: a campfire, a sweaty converse shoe, or a soggy dog toy. I just tasted wrong but I kept drinking it. It had this raw dry taste, really strange. I like campfire tea cause that has a nice ring to it. I'll try and post some videos of it later. My mighty musty cam was used extensively during lunch to capture the moment only to then realize it was in macro mode with some strange effect running... weeee! USEFUL!

To continue my ginger theme, I stole some ginger off of Jen's sushi plate and even topped off the entire meal with a ginger snap latte. I'm all about ginger baby!

So ya, it really tasted like a campfire. And I say sweaty dog toy cause my Katie, bless her little doggie heart was a great dog. And sure she was golden and retrivived well and such but she gave me these big sloppy kisses.. er licks and that tea tasted like her! Ha! Too funny.

Ok I gotta keep the buzz going, I keep escaping the pending doom of Pep Boys.

March 30, 2004

watch me now...

ok no real interest in the site here.. its just this opening song, i LOVED that track, never knew the artist etc, just remember hear it at a rave...

HA!

In my best Strong Bad voice... "japanese cartoons is wierd man...." but indeed i found some milkchan... and yes its STILL very strange. Ya know japanese shockwave is very..... strange.

super milkchan lost?

Remember Super MilkChan? Remember that great website or the crazy screen saver? Anyone still have that screen saver? God I miss that screen saver. GRRR! Well the japanese site appears to be gone, me no more find. Space Shower TV still exists but no evidence of Super Milk Chan, god damn it ADV, WTF john, you had 2 years, heck 3 years to make that work.. still not out. Actually from the moment you got the rights to getting the masters you had maybe.. 8 months to make it work. But its still in a box, a can on the floor somewhere. What good is it now?! You have old flash in the pan, maybe someone innovative and creative and bring it back from the depths but thats not really in yer marketplace. Sell it to MTV, hell they'll get it off ya cheap now... (grumble grumble... old employer.. ADV... i hate lost potential..)

block jam

this man is a GOD, and I want everything he creates... especially block jam, go to products and see the video for it..

new google

Have you noticed? Google has a new interface. Yep new, yes new.. go look again So what? Well keep looking I don't like it. I feel like somethings wrong when I use it. Its not a huge change but enough to cause my experience to go from "i'm searching" to 'umm somethings wrong". Not good. Something like google is more than a visit to Amazon, its a staple in my existance, its my search. Gradual changes are far better than one big boom of a change.

So much new stuff out there, tons of it, each day just overflowing the scene. What scene? Now, this scene, course the blog world is far more interesting than life at times, ya ever notice that? You jump from blog to blog and its like leaping from tree to tree, tokyo to paris to chicago to new york. I suppose its all good, technology opening us up, but did we want to? How often do humans stumble in the dark just to stumble really, did we really want to turn the light on?

Maybe the net, the innovation it brings opens up too many doors. Maybe we were just curious but not THAT curious. Something like MIT's Serendipity, makes me wonder about that. What happened to just communication, simple human to human interaction. Will we become powerless to talk when our instant chat rooms leave us suddenly? If someone turns out the light can we still get out of the box or do we need to wait for the wifi to come back on. Ok maybe thats not all connected, Kallese is my editor, she'll fix that up.

But the point is the same, why do we need this? Ok and here's where im totally two faced, I love inventing and reading about things like this yet at the same time I ask myself why? Heh. The tech behind it isnt really revolutionary either.. bluetooth enabled phones talking to each other in their coded languages while thier masters unsuspectingly sip lattes. So while im enjoying my white mocca my phone is planning for me, its about to call or tell me, six feet over and to the left my potential soul mate is standing there. What happened to my own built in karma? Digital Karma now? Maybe my phone will suggest opening one liners to try or tell me statistically that the last five one liners i tried didnt work. Maybe the phone is also connecting and scheming with the smart architecture of the building and will tell the lights to dim down a bit when i approch, or maybe, shut off all the lights and put the spotlight on me. Maybe my ringtones will burst into a melody fashion so that it will trigger my feet to dance, in my smart shoes even. When do I really need to be human anyways, my gear is me, come date my technology.

Sad, I'm totally into figuring out this tech, yet at the same time, i'd never really want it for real.. sure to test and play maybe. But it seems like such a cruch, do i need this fix. I don't know. I enjoy this conversation though, I'll explore the path cause the destiny of this to be is happening now, I can't stop it, i'm just as curious really, the future is now, join it and or ignore it.. but doesn't change the fact it will be there.

Ya know the funny thing is this concept while new to us here in america perhaps is RAMPANT in japan. Thats hilarious. This goes back to my thinking on how completly whacked we are, all of us. Ahhh well. Its funny, they say "the industry WILL go in that direction eventually.." whats next then? If you can do proximity dating then what next? What's the big backlash to come... in 2030 when mobile soul mate technology gets outlawed for its abuses on the blogosphere or better yet in the flickrverse, what will society be then? We will revert to our primal voice box neverous self absorbed selves? LOL

Least the good part of this rant is found another good blog to read. This is good actually cause on Friday, I have to give a talk on Social Network Applications. Why? We are starting up a new weekly group here at work along with a few other firms in town to share ideas, techniques etc.. and this week its all me! I'm gonna give a talk on Flickr, Friendster, Tribe, Ryze and hopefully Netomat, though i havent used it in awhile. This could be a nice primer for me.

LOL course stepping into a few other blogs touching on MIT's work I stumble upon SenseCam which i've read about before and was actually on the drawing board here to explore methods in capturing the essence of persons day. Yes, it was even a Bob project! LOL, actually it was concieved long ago in the mind of various self aware post it notes and my obession for tiny cameras.. anyways. Its actually dual purpose, for me research, for others memory triggers via sound and image are critical I think. Now if it could capture smell and touch.. hey... whatya know. Thats coming next.

Oooo be sure to all those links, good stuff in there, the Body Area Awareness Network, ooo. More good reads into social network tools.

my sistor

I've gotten far to geeky lately and its important for me to come back down to cloud 9 and tell you all how incredible cool my sister is. She is the best, the greatest, most wonderful, zip dat toootin girl on the planet, well next to Mom, special Mom rules apply to everything but ya get the drift. She's just amazing and I miss her so. Vann Swa'an would not be the man he is today without his sistor. Thanks Pats!

I was troubled a bit that ya couldn't read this blog all that well. I need help with my writing I bet. There are times my mind is a firestorm of ideas and the blog is where I just spit them out in fear that i'll forget something.

I just watched the trailer to 13, yer right thats kinda creepy, I need to watch it. I wonder if thats what you experienced raising your three girls. The hardships, the hurdles and the love that transpired along the way. Rasing a family, thats the job of the century there.

Your gum rocked! And that girl Kallese, no she's not local just gal I met online. Heh. Someday I'll show you flickr and you too can have some fun. :) Traveling is good for you, I miss you bunches, maybe I'll come see you! But first, I need to cut this latest CD for ya!

i am bacon

I am the bacon you seek! Hear my natives of a distant land, I am the bacon master! Bring me your bacon and for I will bake it like no other.

Oh and I got mail from SWEDEN today! Redheads from sweden sent me snail mail...!

Sagar arrives...

Woooha! Alienware said "sorry 3-4 weeks delivery time..." bah no no, you be sorry cause i got a Sagar instead. Wow, this lap is gorgeous, huge wide flat 17 inches of glory. Very cool. Not really portable but not as massive as I thought it'd be. Its sleeker than the big ass HP's ive seen, and seems to have a better screen.

The musty with its 512mb card captures a mere 1hr and 48mins at 320x240 30fps rez.. yippie! That's awesome! I'm seriously thinking about drilling a hole in my dash or afixing some kind of tripod mount so that i can get good road cam footage with this thing. So far I like the mustekdv4000 alot, especially the auto motion blur abilities.

I need to follow Jon out the skateboarding park again, had alot fun there capturing action on mini cams. Spring and good weather just make me wanna shoot video outside. I suppose i should wrap up some mini music videos etc.

Back on the kick about robots and such, especially ones that auto-blog for ya.. speaking of which... WTF clint whats up with yer robot!??! Give it to Bob or something man, he'll build it. Geeze.. damn clint is sitting on an Evo or something and hasnt built it yet. (were assuming cause we havent heard about it yet).. anyways. I thought about getting a Romba for awhile there, just cause its a robot plus it'd do something useful.

Oh ya and I keep thinking Skype and Flickr should merge ideas.. I keep thinkin Flickr with audio interaction would be really really new.. maybe put it on a teamspeak like level.

I want the Twist Together Lamp from Glide, someone buy it for me, now, hurry!

Oh ya and I joined a Locative Media listserv discusing topics and demos like TagNScan, which is very cool and I think could have huge impacts on design research. Having particpants tag'n'scanning an enviroment and reporting back and then having a focus group session on the results etc, clever unique motivators into exploring a space, i like i like.

On the Japanese front I've been soaking up a few episodes of Platonic Chain. Er, trying to make sense of it. Its comprised of 22, 15min mini episodes of totally 3D animation. Can't place the rendering tech per say but it's in the realm of lightwave3d or 3dStudio etc. The story covers how the moblie tech world has become increasingly networked and 3 girls using their phones tap into something unusual. Its a bit like Serial Experiments Lain so I'm naturally a bit drawn to it. I think smartmobs folk in general would probably get into it.

Lately I've seen a trend of anime concieved ideas in shows take physical shape into real products in Japan. Its been cool to see what I thought was just a cool visual design idea effect etc in Cowboy Bebop actually take shape into a real product. Everything from mobile tech concepts to displays and branding fixtures its.. very cool stuff. We dream the wildest things for our fiction only to then have it manifest into our reality. Japan is a classic example of this and continues to lead the way I think. Often just stumbling fast foward into the darkness of it all at a blinding pace with no real concerns or thought to real world implications of how these ideas transfer from canvas to physical form. Its amazing to see.

Speaking of anime, the new Macross Zero is a FRICKIN amazing animation. This show is golden, from the 3d animation to the beautiful 2d looks and effects of characters, scenery etc.. incredible stuff.

Some interesting links ive been reading.. Neruocognitive Linguistics, no idea how i found it, but its been a good read so far.

I keep seeing Sam the Cat in the my web travels and I'm convinced I need one.

And i'm curious about reinventing what has clearly become the obession of people everywhere on this planet since it has arrived... Email.

Ahhhh!

Must make it thru this week and then i'll be free!

Not a bad weekend, I got alot done despite all consuming effect of SpellForce, which btw is a pretty cool game. It's still trying to do waaay too much though. My character is seriously out of balance yet I just keep on truckin into the void of level advancement. The game gets crazy when ya got 75+ units battling it out in the RTS mode, which you can then jump down into the FPS view of it and particpate on that level if need be. The graphics are awesome and theres already an expansion pack otw.

All attempts to work this weekend failed except for a bit of inspiration last night, I got my notes down and my outline in place for what I wanna see happen today and tomorrow.

In other news I think I have a crush on Rachel Ray of 30 - Minute Meals on the Food Network. I love her little stories and she always cooks up something I think.. sure someday I could make. I can't quite place it but her accent and her down home country feel is a big turnon for me. She's funny, kind, and straight foward. Could be Miss SwissMiss after all, I gotta get her cookbook now too.

Also I think Jesee James of Monster Garage needs a new act, the bad ass tonka man needs a new lease on life! And Funk Master Flex needs less yooooo's good daddy lamas and more car stuff. And Chappele rocks!

I caught up on all my Significant Others episodes this weekend, that show is hilarious! I love the improv like style to it. Very funny, go watch now, GO.. FLEE!

Stewart of Flickr informed me last nite that "drock (my handle on there) has uploaded the most pictures on flickr this month!" LOL me? Little old me? I guess its all a bit consuming eh? The flickrverse continues to offer a nice distraction from the daily bliss of old ohio. I'll try and be a bit more responsible with my image madness in April.

Speaking of April, that means spring is here and cars need modifying! Yes I plan to add the rally light kit and some stencil'd out designs for the mini in a few weeks. What designs? I'm considering the obey giant star in a 2 color stencil cut vynil type stick on or magnet for the doors, maybe something more for the roof. Rally lights are a must too.

Let's see in other news I've been dabbling in desktop yoga lately to rid myself of some work related stress, simple lessons so far have had nice results. May have to give yoga a full run here in a bit... Must talk to Matt about that, he's the yoga expert in the family.

I think I need a lounger/lazyboy/massage chair for the apartment. I need a better place to read. Oh ya and I had a brainstorm yesterday on outdoor party mayhem via projectors and a real fence like structure for the back/side yard we have here. With good weather coming in, all kinds of ideas start pumping. Need to get tunes outside and i still wanna get a projector out there (borrow one from work) and shoot the garage or siding with stragne late night horror flicks etc. I noticed one of my neighbors has turned their garage into a lounge area.. thats pretty cool.

Let's see net wise I've been addicted to just one thing lately, Del.ic.ious, its delicious! I'm addicted to finding new links and hording the ones i love. An oldie renewed recently, Audio Bored has been relaunched with a new look, interface, toolkit and more. Check that one out! And gasp.. a new hiptop has been seen... could it be the new hiptop will arrive on the scene before my 3620?!!? Which i need to call to see if its out already or what! Lastly I've been sending a good deal of time in Kallese's linked Craftster reading about what to do with all my magazines and how to stencil, must stencil now!

just what the doc ordered...

Been awhile seen i've seen Penpen. What the heck is happening?!?! Let's see. Work oh ya lots of that, maddening lately, I want this current project over with, I want to do something ELSE! Ahhh well, take it stride I say. Least the weather is pickin up, its a nice cool evening. All sunny tomorrow they say, could be good Mini driving weather.

I picked up a beefy memory card for the Mustek4000.. i need a shorter name of that thing, I picked up a new memory card for musty, so far the videos look ok, they have built in motion blur! They look better than the ones ive taken with the Kodak. i think i need to tweak them so that they stream... audi drive, bad horror movie. More to come.

barcelona

One of our team members is in Barcelona this week on biz. I wish him safe travel over there. I found this cool map site that has photos of the area, very cool I wish i had more sites like this. You can click on the streets and get a photo view of what that street looks like, buildings and all. It'd be great to scout out cities this way or areas yer about to arrive to before ya get there. Now if the pictures were bigger even better.

Did ya see Starbucks stock is a mere 37 bucks lately? Should of gotten into that back when it went crashed with all the other stocks out there, it was hangin at 23 i remember. Ahhh well.

holy crap

Ok i just spell checked the state of the flooz.. geeze i suck! I need a smart blogger assistant that just auto corrects me as I go.

let me just say...

my spelling and grammar suck... and that is all.. now go eat a BLT and enjoy life...

and someone asked me today.. passion or money.. and i said money.... then they said love or money and i said love.... and then someone said redhots or milkduds and i said redhots... whats the connection, i dont know.

state of the flooz

Well its official, Gator Dave has moved to the outskirts of Delaware and working on his banjo band. No actually Delaware is kind of nice and quiet out there and I wish him and Jen well, they make a great couple. Gator Dave will be spinning up a new biz this spring/summer taking his gator skills to schools everywhere teachin kids about gators, bird feet and more. Starting a small biz is tough so if any of ya'll have any ideas on how to help the guy out pass them along, meet me in the flickrverse or check out gatordave.net today!

Although the cold is here the sun is coming and soon road trips are gonna be bound for mini madness. To step up this years mini goodness I've purchased yet another low-fi recording device to record the man great mini adventures to come. What adventures you say? Well I'll be heading back up to Berlin, Oh to see the Amish again for sure, that was a good road trip. I also plan to scout out Ohio's Covered Bridges for unique photo opportunities, and make a trip out to Hershey, Pa for a much needed infusion of good old Hershey history. I remember going to the Hershey Museum as a kid and for the longest time I've wanted to go back and revisit it all.

So what new tech to aid me on these missions? Ahh yes, the Mustek DV4000. This baby is toots its horn being a 7 piece wonder. Its an 4 mega pixel still cam, an mpeg4 vid cam with 640x480 rez at 15fps and 320x240 at 30fps, a voice recorder, an mp3 player, a data drive, card reader and a pc web cam... and its smaller than my nokia phone. LOL too funny. I didn't think it'd be soooo small but it is. There were several contenders for this camera. I considered the Panasonic SVAV-50 and the SiPix Pocket DV but in the end thought the Mustek was one to go with.. considering of course this is all low-fi recording and what not. So far so good it performs. The main reason I wanted to get this cam was because my Kodak MC3 while useful in my mini recordings, it didn’t have a backlit lcd so seeing what I was actually recording was difficult. Difficulties aside I did have a lot of fun with the Kodak last year, so to step it up a notch I wanted another camera like it. Tack on a 512mb card on this baby and we got some nice recording abilities. Already I’ve seen its output and its quite nice considering the low-fi nature of it. What's most funny so far is just how small this camera is, and I mean small, its about the size of the Sony Cybershot but just a wee shorter, that size for 4mega pixels and a dv cam make it a powerful package, and just under $200 bucks a sweet deal in my opinion. Heck it even has a tripod mount! Wooha!

In other news the flickrverse continues and with the recent exposure of flickr on techtv has introduced a flood of new people to the site. Growth is good but the medium of photo-enabled chat brings out the freaks, I'd hate to see flickr become the new porn irc client out there. My take on irc is that is ugly, mass confusion and basically just blah, ya sure ya go chat but it’s lifeless. Flickr takes it up a notch but it still has many hurdles to overcome and I seriously don't want it to turn into a glorified irc, but hey we'll see. It gets me thinking though, what are the barriers left, how can flickr become more integrated in people’s lives and at the same time not fall into the pit of irc despair. I think if flickr recognized my yhoo and aol IM ids it'd be much more valuable. I also think flickr needs to be more integrated with my environment. My toolbar is limited on space and a minimized flickr tells me nothing. I'd want it to be like trillian minimized or something. I see the potential to use flickr for research though. I could see having participants in remote locations creating online collages and what not. I guess part of me really doesn't want to just chat, I’ve chatted before, I want more, pictures are good, next I want animated gifs and eventually some kind of flickr based acceptable visual movie medium, maybe excessive quicktimes and windows movies are out, that’s ok, tell me what’s in, it would be cool to post a moving image, like a mini slideshow that plays within the gui to all that see it, like a 7fps jpg or something. In the end flickr is probably more of a social/tech experiment. From a biz perspective I could see selling this tech/concept to others yet at the same time I feel like it isn’t sparking and accelerating fast enough. The chat concept works, the pictures are good, but the groups and getting people to stay and really get into, hasn’t happened yet. Yes I know its beta but that doesn't change the vibe I me, so I can’t help but to think what are the remaining barriers for me and other to deem it "arrived" and part of my daily experience. Or is that even a goal of flickr? I don’t know.

Gah we've reached the future and SPAM is the answer. You can't escape it, its everywhere and growing, I threaten you with SPAM! How lame is that, a guy threatens google. And ya know this is just gonna get worse.

I've been playing around with some new apps lately. One of them is MindMapper from MindJet. Software for brainstorming and much more they say. Using the tablet version is pretty cool. Getting yer ideas organized is good, to me this is like a refined more useful version of VISIO no doubt it’s not quite the same but it’s far more useful in organizing ideas. We spend a lot of time in VISIO making maps, I hope to see work utilize this app more so for that kind of work. There's lots of ties to XML and HTML and PowerPoint etc for exporting out maps once they are completed.

Also on the app list lately is Fractal Edge an Explorer replacement for the tablet. And ya it pretty much replaces all I need from Explorer and is sooooo much more pen friendly. I love it.

I've been meaning to use the Rasterbator for awhile now, maybe I’ll get to it today. Discover Koovus on the net in linkdom heaven. I think i've kicked the AC2 habit.. I jumped in game this weekend for about 40mins and found myself wondering why I was there. I missed a big update to the game recently and I was behind the new goals, the new quests etc.. I still like the engine though. The world of AC2 is pretty and fun when yer into it, just wasn’t into it. Plus I wish the mobs had some basic AI other than sit in place and wait to be argo'd. I still want something new from gaming, UT2k4 is ok, its pretty, fun etc.. but the net play has been for crap so far, very laggy, and I get that jump screen effect. Maybe it was just the six instances I tried it but that’s pretty sad for my cable connection. Course maybe it was bit torrent in the background affecting it. The game modes are ok, I’m still hungry for something new though. Lately my gaming time has been creative app time, which is better for me really. I fear the interface hell of lightwave though, for as much as I want to get back in it, I’m horribly lost in the interface.

Well that’s about it for the flooz, still no comments due to mass spamming, I hate those bastards. Catch me on flickr sometime if ya want to talk, I’m listed as drock on there.

don't fight it

Busy busy busy lately. My second round encounter with flickr these past few days has sparked a river of inspiration in me. It started with just random picture creation and turned into paradoy ad campaigns and creating false marketing and promo pieces. I couldn't stop. I kept getting more and more ideas the more I thought about flickr. What is it about this obscure little company crafting unique experiences that has me hearing Snagglepuss's voice in my head at 3am. Litterly the other night I woke up and heard "hey get flicki'n will ya.. we got stuff to do.." in Snagglepuss's voice. I loved that voice. That whimiscal sarcastic lounge cat, it was in my head, speaking to me.

I'm really a graphics hack, ok... maybe the most talented graphics hack in my collective of friends. Still I dunno what made me do it, I blame George and all the friends i've met at flickr reccently. I keep creating and that is a blast. Funny thing is the more out there i get the more likely these items would actually sell I think. I mean I'd buy that lunchbox. Ok sure Snagglepuss was here long before flickr or I ever discovered him but.... still I could see a marketing folks talking about bringing back his character licensing it from whoever and kicking off some whacked out buzz campaign. Happens all the time, why not Snagglepuss, he's perfect!

So after I got Snagglepuss outa my head (and theres more images out there btw, you'll have to come to flickr to see them all) I went back to chatting and like all chats you start stumbling on even more ideas. I started thinking about Shibuya 109, what would flickr do there. Google is my partner on all this, i search for some images find and start the magic. I was looking for the classic neon signs galore shot, ya know the in heart of tokyo type shot where all you see are people all over the frickin place and every building is an advert. I found a few with old 109 in it and then I found this pic. Not sure what the location is but that one asian guy I thought.. he's got to be wearing a flickr shirt! And its always what you don't show that sells something.

Soon more ideas come to mind...

After watching Futurama's Why of Fry episode where nibbler speaks "NEGATIVE" it got me thinking, flickr.. mascot.. nibbler perfect! But nibbler would't say anything of course, but his image is imposing, its powerful yet highly comical, what works here.. lets see. Don't Fight It! Its like reistance is futile.

Then of course we have the protoypes...

Thinking about flickr some more I thought about all the early concepts or protoypes people first start with before they get to their new refined product. What concepts did the flickr team come up with? How many failures led to the rise of the great flickr? Like all concepts ya gotta go way back, start really basic, get something that attaches the idea or emotion of a product and infuse it with some heartless souless box and keep it all under budget. I dunno where I found the picture, I was looking for vintage slider viewers, I wanted a 60's contraption, some big bulky .00004 beta of what flickr could of represented. I found this picture along the way. It's hilarious, I love it.

Making the image wasn't enough, i had a voice in me, that false franky the shark press engine that wanted to speak. I had to create back history, the images needed certification...it was even more fun then creating the images.

"Taken off the market in late '73, the Woody Woodpecker FrickinFlickr was labeled a disaster by company's internal marketing department.

Early tests with the frickinflickr revealed flaws in the projection system to irradiate what scientists believe are now called "geekyviibe"'doms.

Parents in fear of their offspring becoming increasingly geeky caused an alarming outbreak of would be woody bashers. As the mobs took the streets, the frickinflickr was quickily taken off the market."

I think part of me wanted to see how far you could go, what combination of elements both visual and text could make ya believe that it was real. Hokey sure.. but could of been real.

I think I'll turn the lens of dan to focus on flickr and its overseas cross promotional products and fast food maybe. flickr sponsored x-games or maybe flickr sponsorsed noodle nutgrams from the Shinkoyooajka corp, WE BRING NOODLES TO LIFE! Anyways its been alot of fun.

March 16, 2004

all new everyday

Not really but heck we got snow man, "Won't you take me to, FLOOZY TOWN.. Won't you take me to... FLOOZY TOWWWN..."

Snow people Midwest March never fails, we always seem to get snow. So odd though, yesterday was beautiful and today... SNOW! And its perfect snowball snow.. that's mana from heaven I say.

Ya know what else is new? The KwikStop on Godown Road, the carryout of drive thru grab a cold one goodness.. is now Quench Caverns! Where do people come up with these names.. why is it small biz owners always have worst names.. I mean its a drive thru right? Call it MOE's or something catchy. But wait theres more, remember Bumpers? It's gone! Its something else.. didn't get the name just remember the yellow sign and the martini glass in the logo. Gah.. no more bumpers, that's a bummer. Not that I ever really went there.

What else is new.. let's see I've taken a big break from AC2 lately, I dunno not grabbing me at the moment. UTK24k-Whatever has been alot of fun. Oh that and everything else like Flickr which has been consuming alot of time lately. Flickr just gets better and better.

In other other other news... hmmmm work the process the story the life.. continues. They crumbled and picked up 2 new tablets. Woooha! I will convert the masses. The new Toshiba's are pretty darn nice.

I've been watching Significant Others on Bravo lately, a hilarious show catch it if you can. Of course i'm still addicted to all that is CSI and especially Cold Case. I really really like Cold Case, by far the best show I've seen in along time. I just love the composition, the flashbacks etc. A wonderfully crafted piece of entertainment.

Oh ya speaking of wonderful, ie great, all that is good and more. I'm back on the Bit Torrent scene.. hungry for a little new in the way of anime I fired up a new bit torrent client and began the mass downloadage. Ya know Bit Torrent works suprisingly well. I'm very pleased with the results.

Last but not least I stopped over at Clint n Traci's last nite and checked out CinemaWoods, the new metroplex... dang now I have to say that is one impressive home theater. Clint & Traci deserve a big round of applause for that achivement. Sitting in that mini theater was impressive, but I fear I'd never leave. I think before when I thought Home Theater I thought of gear, a sofa and hanging out, but now.. its different.... waay different. I want the complete experience, and they got it.. well everything but the sour patch kids.

Oh ya and and lastly.. I can't see downtown from the office here.. which is crazy since its right here. MASS SNOW FALL!

a little fun

Two weekends ago my brother Paul and I test drove the Ford F150 Lightning. We tested it for a good 45mins it seemed like.. probably the longest "test" drive i've been on in a while. Paul had driven the Lightning before and loved how it could just burn rubber and lots of it. After picking up the truck and convincing Barry our salesman that we were serious... honest.. really.. we screamed out to Avery road area and looked for places to do sit and spins, 360's you name it. That is one FAST and furious truck. I never thought about trucks before as being anything sporty or just pure crazy... the Lightning is all that and more. Paul had a hard time resisting the urge to do sit and spins everywhere we went. It was a fun run and sadly like all good times eventually they end and we had to face the dealership and get the dreaded pitch. I hate the pitch personally, "what's it gonna take to sell you this truck!" luckily we had a good story, "it cant pull our boat..." and it worked, yer right it can't. Still having to sit thru a 15min pitch was too much for me. I was egar to test the next car.

danger danger

ATT Wireless is continually testing my patience... I want that Nokia 3620 damn it!! Where is it.. the local stores tell me "who knows... i don't think its coming out.." I know it is but the clueless local folk just don't care I say! And now... today I read about Danger Inc's NEW... Hiptop. Yes a new generation of hiptops is about to hit the market.. in about six months. Currently the net is buzzing about an apperance yet not photographs were allowed to be taken.. only this crude drawing surfaced.. LOL

In short, the device is longer, thinner and a little more rectangular than the first generation Hiptop. It's much more usable as a phone, however, with dedicated call and hang-up buttons that with characteristic Danger ingenuity, nestle around a more discreet, redesigned wheel. Which also doubles up as the earpiece. Over on the left are the familiar Menu and Jump keys, but are joined by a new D-pad. Ya ya ya.. i see i see but what about increased and or better battery life? I did read that the camera is now intergrated into the camera... about time!

I doubt the new hiptop will make it before the Nokia 3620 but I can't wait to see it regardless.

Let's see so where were we? Last week I was sick with something, I dunno what but something. Feeling much better this weekend and to top it off got ahold of some new art and tunes.

My obessession with Shepard Fairey's Obey Giant propaganda engineering art pieces grows and grows. I have five pieces obey giant and if I could i'd collect it all! I simply love the art style, this 30's 40's war propaganda art style is never old to me. Rarely do I find something as compelling and continually fresh like obey giant. My latest piece is actually an old poster now out of print, (most pieces are limited runs of 200 or less), which I picked up off of ebay last year. The old poster was pretty beat to all hell but I loved the composition. Most of these prints get basic framing, some like the big guy downstairs get a really nice framing job. This latest one something simple yet looks uttery amazing on the wall. Makes me wanna redo the whole room in some obey giant theme.. like what would a entertainment center or couch look like in this propoganda theme... I dont know. Very cool stuff.

The second piece of art I got framed this weekend is actually an old wood block print my mother gave me. Steel Hawk, it was the first real art piece I did in highschool... or was it grade school? I remember giving it to my father for a birthday and my mother kept it all these years. When she handed it to me the other day I just figured a memory like this should remain intact as best it can, so a decent framing job for it as well.

Rounding out the day of new art new sounds arrive as well. Dipping back into the sound of deep dark dirty beats of nuskool they call it, basically the darker side of break beat. It's always nice to find fresh sounds.

Lastly the weekend wrapped up finishing off Reefer Madness from the author of Fast Food Nation. It was... ok. Nothing major and not nearly as good as FFN. Next up on the reading was Art of Deception by Kevin Mitnick hacker turned security expert.. and well I dunno I'm only a few chapters in it and already I'm hungry for a good adventure or something so I'm gonna finish off Philip K Dick Selected Short Stories.. go for a ride ya know. Besides I just got Johnny Mnemonic last night on tv so I still got the cyberpunk bite in me.. oh and Dark City comes on tonight! Ok yes.. I have like four dvd copies of that flick but still I must tivo it.

nice finds

Check out these closings... lol hackers find there way into some nice tv closing information postings.

I like what this guy does, two great ideas... shoes that advertise.. classic stuff.. and a tablet pc romba robot. Ya know I thought about getting a romba for the heck of it just to see it work. He's also got a nice piece on location based playlists. I love this location based development stuff.

Hungry for a little motion history check out the archive online. Lotta good stuff here.

Well here's the happy go lucky version of delcious, Furl! FUUUURL. Hmmm I prefer the de lic ious.. in fact even Koovus has a listing on there.

testing testing

New tech, theres nothing more refreshing than new tech! Need new tech. Ok so i've been reading up on the new wave of tablets on the scene lately. I still love the HP TC1100 the best though. An upgrade may occur if I play my cards right.

I still think taking notes in the field via tablet is the way to go but I have a long ways to go to prove the concept. Many hurdles are in the way, from tech, to programming to general user acceptance. However I strongly feel its possible. Along those same lines i've been testing new tablet software, actually Mind Manger isn't for tablets only, you can use it with any pc. So far its proved to be a great brainstorming tool.

I'm still waiting on the Nokia 3620 to make the scene as far as camera phones go. It's long overdue and be had online but they make it a hassle to move my # over to it, least thats what they tell me. So I wait and wait.

I'm waffling between Inspiron 300m / 600m's and Lattitude 500 series laptops for work. Actually I'm not a huge fan of DELL boxes but looks like we're gonna go this way anyways. The Lattitudes are ligher and bit more biz savy but the Inspiron's have better vid cards and firewire etc on them, nice things to have. The issue at hand is weight, everyone wants something lighter and with no compromises. We'll see what turns out this week.

Joining the Lextant team this week are two new hires. The lextant family grows and the work just keeps coming. It's all good I say.

Heh.. last night I got a call from Andy man, the Lady Death maker from old ADV FILMS, my mid 20's work horse obession. Sounds like its all going well, well typical ADV at least. Sounds like alot of the young spirit of the firm is gone though. Sounds like work x work x work x more work.

I was at ADV from 95-00'... the early years where we took a month to get a film now. Now they do 20 or more in a month. I can honestly say it sounds even more like a sweat shop that what it was when I left. And its all art ya know.. i dunno it sucks to work with cool material only to realize yer gonna just crank it thru the machine to get it on the shelf in the end. Its like the dark side of film. Theres a dark side to the production of it when money plays such a strong hand that the very art of the work itself is lost. Who cares about art just make the show get it out there! Or wait a sec, the real art happened in Japan by the people that made the show, ADV just stamps english on it and passes it thru the system. Maybe thats the mind set I need. Still I remember what I deem as the early glory days of ADV being open to ideas, creativily enhancing productions and fostering high morale amongst employees. All of that tossed out the window it sounds like.

I hope Andy can make it out alive. In some respects he's in the bubble of production where only the production matters but he's one force against the masses that ADV is no doubt today. Level after level of management in the way of art, hell its not a film any more its a product. I don't do.. ok well I did do.. trailers for products but I cant infuse my creative soul with the glory of the buck, just doesn't work, the buck didn't whip out the ion cannon and blow away that guy the art did that.

Maybe fans shouldnt work in the biz cause they always get walked on because they value the art of the product admist the odds of others cranking the piece for the buck of it.

Andy told me "you got out at the perfect time man, you've couldn't hack this now.. you wouldn't of surivied..." he's probably right. Course when I left ADV, I still remember the day walking into John's office with my seeya letter.. I had no real reason why I was leaving ADV. To this day there's no real reason why I left other than I strong feeling that I could do no more. The ladder options before me didnt matter. I didnt want any ones job and I think $$$ wouldnt matter. Do I miss the biz? Yes. I miss the heart of it. The idea to paper to video to package to shelf to viewer.. I miss that. It's a different passion than that of a fan in love with a character, I wanted the world, the world projected into the arms of the consumer, the hype and vibe of a film that made people go "ya that rocked" i wanted that.. though I knew that a good show typically could only create that.

I had a good talk with Andy. Though deep down I wish back in 2000 I could of dragged him out of there as well. He'll finish Lady Death this year and ride on the waves of it for a few months and then he'll get his cards back and decide on what hand to play next. It is my hope that he'll go on to other production firms and continue to make animation... with or without ADV.

Deep down I think I judged John for taking so many friends on the ride.. and it was the ride. I guess we were all willing to a point but I think he had a hand in how it came together no doubt. My hopes that he'd come out of his spin never manifested and it seems he's lost control as well. ADV has no fearless leader no more, even John sounds barely in control of his own company. Maybe I can't judge him, and I made some friends from him and got a few lessons on the dark side as well. And he's still a friend though its like the old saying keep your friends close but your enemies closer, but what possible threat do pose now other than a reminder of the past and how it used to be back when we were just a handful of hopeful people.

It was still a good experience, but it pains me to see it mangle people along the way. Its like the old days of CS heh. Every workplace has a story to tell, a lesson to learn, a message to pass on.

Carry on Andy! Get that flick out, do great things and I'll see ya in the summer 04 maybe. I do have to say that a one man production effort on Lady Death, I think, is a bad idea. First of all Andy doesn't sleep he can't, no idea how he's suriving under the stress of the entire production. Secondly focus, to get focus, you need to willingly let go of it all and return with a clear mind. How can do you do that when your an army of one. Third, new eyes, he needs to have new eyes on the project, gotta be willing to let yer ego get stomped on a bit and let new eyes see what you have not seen. Fourth, the Lady deserves to dance. Let the gal outa the box man, let it flow, let it go. I dunno i've been the single production on the smallest of dan projects and ya sure yer in control and its ok and its also yer world, thats the problem, sooner or later you want the whole world to buy into yer world to do that ya gotta open up. Why do ya think it was ever scribbled on paper in the first place. It's gotta breathe!
