hype

Its amazing just how much hype apple can suck out of the public these days. A strange little company that can re-invent the paper clip by painting it neon and changing nothing else can land on the front page of the New York Times with a heading like "Apple Breaks New Grounds with Paperclip"...

I'm talking abou the ISight webcam gizmo. I saw in yesterdays Dispatch, E-Connect section just how revolutionary Apple is in offering the world, the web cam. As if that's new. Man Apple can just write a good story or something. Sure they do have innovation and all, and ya an iPod is cool, iTunes isnt really new but sure whatever, but a frickin web cam? Ummm they have been around already baby!

the iSight wont do jack unless its used, thats the biggest problem i see with web cam tech "taking over the world..". It needs users, and users want features and abilities that are useful and that other people use. Until that happens you can keep on making killer tech and it wont be used until people figure out that hey heres another thing i must use. I dont think the web cam is there yet. Sure its useful, but what im saying is, the iSight didnt make it useful, hell we've had web cams already.

Maybe its the clueless media and its all part of the hype. There are aspects of the Apple line I like but more and more I see hype and silly propaganda on just who invents who these days. The iPod is a nice sleek product but thats it. iTunes? Listen.com was there before that, and CDuctive.com was there before that. Nothing new. Yet to public through hype and a few cheesy articles, only Apple can be the sacred cow of our time. Pah!

Another rant. Friendster. Friendster doesn't actually help you find new friends, its designed to make you electronicly aware of yer current friends. Yep, you cant find anyone new unless you add say Barry, and then Barry adds Leroy, and Leroy adds Sue. Ok so you want to get to Sue, well I know Barry and odds are if I know him well enough I'd find out about Sue eventually, why the hell do I need yet another privacy intruding website to help me network my real life existing network? Maybe I should get the Breather 2000, it runs in the tool tray on my pc and reminds me to breathe. Maybe Friendster is made for the kind of people that have 200 instant messagener buddies. And yes I've met those folks, most of them are 13. One funny thing about Friendster is that it assumes theres a high likelyhood that some ya know is in the system, so do a search! I looked for Susan Smith, not knowing her at all and sure enough I found three susans to send a note to and say, hello this is yer buddy dan! Whats worse about friendster is that there isnt even any forums section where you could meet people and then add them even. Overall I found it yet another hype application on the net. One more piece of something amazing yet I really dont need it.

So all the rage over Friendster is the social networking tool of it and I understand that yet I find it limited still. Hiptop Nation grants me access without thinking about it, I just belong by default, people can find me, I can find them. Friendster wont find anyone for you, you dont exist unless you know someone else and they too have embraced friendster. I just find that distrubing. I'd much rather have something like Meetup that encourages people to communicate and socialize on the net and then you take it from there.

I guess Friendster has a place somewhere because people are using it. I just don't see it as usefull as say something like the blogosphere java tools that show the spider linkage between floozyspeak and google etc. Another problem with friendster but also rampant everywhere else is fake idenities which i'll admit, I like to do as well. I get tired of always sending out my beacon of reality to the net, I want an alter ego that is totally fake cause I'm tired of entering all my personal data for whatever whoever lands on the net that wants it. I'd pay money to have a front man for me, I need a Barry, I'm Dan in RL, but Barry whoever is my online idenity, he gets the spam, the porn mail, the crank calls etc.. but Dan hes free.

So the lure of having that one friend you know tap you into a vast network of unknowns is well.. sure i guess that could happen but to manage yer own existing network of people ya know, that is kinda creepy. Its like adding a third party over seerer into yer network of reality, thats big brother gang, and eventually big brother will start charging you fees online or subject you to a few dozen viagra popup ads and targeted messaging.. "hey i noticed yer bio said you like long walks, well if you act now you can Long Walks, the CD for only 9.95!!!".... pah!

stop drinking Apple Hateraid- that company is no different than any other greedy take over the world mentality- word to that. And bow down- for Apple is soon to take on the lead in the Pay to Play music- yeah it sux, but at least they are trying to do something outside of total wackness- Once October 29th hits and Napster tries to trick the masses into paying for this #@!*^! will Apple or Napster be on top- I know who has my vote ;~)
