Embassy vs. Mass Commercializaion

I found 'Condos for Sale' to be interesting insight into the Mind of Dan. I fail to see anything Onion-like in the announcement of plans to build an Embassy and safe housing in Baghdad. To me, that seems like the logical next step after securing the country. It's a long and tenuous leap from a formal diplomatic presence to mass commercialization of Radio Shaks and McDonalds. Will we manage to some day export our consumer culture to Iraq? Possibly, but I think it will be quite difficult for the near future. Right now the Arab world is boycotting American brands. I don't see "liberated" Iraqi's lining up anytime soon to purchase U.S. goods, even IF they had the means to do so.

I think ya gotta have a good amount of "balls" to let the press know that yer planning on an embassy in a country you haven't conqured yet. Granted we are a ballzy nation but is this kind of article really needed to be expressed?

It just makes me smile, makes me think my own little ramblings. :)

Like listening an embedded corrospondent in the airborne division today talk about how they are changing the rules of engagement for the apache helicopters, apparently theres been resistance and i know it may be shock and awe for us, but iraq's are firing back. The way the reporter talked about it was as if the notion of people fighting back was not expected and the pentagon has to review the rules of engagement. The minute i heard this hilarious visions popped into my mind, i wish i could draw comics, I mean people are shooting back.. WTF?!?

This all just adds to the hilarious view I have of our current invasion of Iraq... er I mean Operation Iraqi Freeeedoooom. Sadly the Onion has yet to write some good articles lately. But who needs to really.. our press is doing great!

I agree, the notion that they weren't going to fight back is absurd and what is unfolding is a whole bunch of totaly wacked assumptions by the planers of this campaign. But, I just don't see planing an embassy as a ballsy move. We have them everywhere. They are just formal diplomatic ties. Once Saddam is out we'll have one, it actually goes without saying to me. I still think it's a foregone conclusion that we will win this, the only real question is how long it will take. Some of the bad planning that is now emerging seems to indicate it will take much longer than it should have.
