about FloozySpeak
My friends here locally in Columbus, Ohio claim that I drink mainly floozy drinks. Now how the margarita got tagged as floozy in the minds of my friends I dont know, but thats one step to the truth on how this blog became to be. As for the speak, that's pretty easy, i've always been drawn to creation in all its various forms. I love to ramble which is good and bad I suppose but for this blog weve had some good times and good content.
FloozySpeak is my take on todays culture and existence. I think we're floozies in the sense that were all addicted to the stream of ideas happening on the web. Some of us are far more entangled into this web of endless imagination than others. I'm definitely drawn to this place. This is my recorder. I record my moments here, my takes on whats happening around me and I really love the blog for that basic reason.
My writing tends to be a stream of consciousness and I rarely spell check, which taunts me from afar as I expand into areas of interest where I need to be more structured on my views. Generally though I like the free form, right here, right now, this blog, go record mentality. It's messy, yes, it's real, yes, it's live, yes, it's fresh.
So thats the name, what about the blog? I work in user experience research better known as design research or human factors. I tend to blog about my experiences in research and all the various aspects of my work that interest me - the data capture, analysis, process, biz dev, trends, and more. Even more specific would be things like ethnography, qualitative data analysis software, and day in the life experience capture and so on. Apart from the research angle theres my own obsession with the edge as ive been referring to lately. The edge is the buzz happening on the net, its everything from API development to social networks to location based services, mobile you name it, web 2.0, gadgets, trend spotting and more. I thrive on this edge and I try to keep up with it cause it's where the patterns start forming, you sit at the edge of discovery in many ways can you see the pattern that will soon be the next thing? The edge is emerging technology in the social context. It's not just the technology its the resounding boom of it on the web that's interesting to me.
For hobbies I like animation and motion graphics, im an old school Avid Editor, I worked in Japanese Animation for 6 years- that was fun and that fuels my drive to constant create music videos for the heck of it. I dabble in as many creative art packages as possible. I lean towards the quick cool animation apps out there, some flash stuff, some data visualization and so on. I just started getting into podcasting and video blogging so we will see more of that on the Flooz here.
Like many bloggers, my blog is like therapy for me. Plotting my ideas over time is great I think and its a huge release for me. I can recall memories and moments, I can search my past, what I was thinking, saying, doing. Without it would I be crazy? Nah, Id probably be creating something else really.
about dan rockwell
I go by many names on the web: koovus, dan, jimmydan, freakyjimmy and so on. You can call me whatever ya like. I live in Columbus, Ohio. For a living I am a User Experience Researcher at Lextant a design research company here in Columbus. No degree present. I sorta skipped that chapter and taught myself everything along the way. ive worked the gambit on what I'd call production like venues- advertising, marketing, video production and I grew up conducting research and ethnography as part of my childhood working for my father who is a Phd Industrial Engineering and Human Factors professor at OSU. So you can basically say that I got the research gene. I love sushi and long walks on the beach with my special gal. I'm the youngest of six in a great guilt driven catholic family. Not really all that guilty, we just make fun of guilt. I dig electronic music, writing, drawing, cartooning, creating.. heh.. I figure that part has gotten thru by now.
